Qualcomm has been crowned king of the SoC market. According to Strategy Analytics, 63% of mobile devices have a Qualcomm chipset inside. That’s not only the lion’s share of the market, it’s far and away leading the pack, with the closest competitor a good 50 percentage points behind.

The number two spot went to MediaTek, who has come on strong lately with Octa-core chipsets. They overtook Intel for second place in 2013, but still fall far behind Qualcomm. At 12% market share, MediaTek is far behind the king, and barely in front of Intel. the leading PC chipset maker is responsible for 8% of all mobile SoCs, and their recently announced 64-bit chipset could prove troublesome for MediaTek.

Strategy Analytics also says the processor market has down 8.3%, and is now worth about $19 billion. The market is expected to continue that growth trend in 2014, as LTE becomes more ubiquitous. Faster data should encourage new handset purchases, with LTE enabled chipsets on the checklist of many consumers. Even the mid-range market, which should see a boon of attention this year, is likely to see LTE capable handsets.

With a Snapdragon chipset that’s fast becoming ubiquitous in the market, Qualcomm is unlikely to be disrupted at the top. Top to bottom, the Snapdragon lineup has something available for every tier of handset. As LTE continues to roll out incrementally, we’ll look to LTE enabled handsets like the rumored Moto G as the barometer for success in the marketplace.
