As Project Shield became a reality, we became enamored. While the handheld stakes it’s place amongst the new crop of Android gaming consoles, there could be a follow-up sooner than you’d think. NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang spoke with Engadget after the announcement, and tipped his hat on a few things in the works.

First, Huang noted that the next Tegra chip is already in the works. Dubbed Project Logan (Wolverine?), Huang says it the new Tegra chip has “all the architectural sophistication you see in a PC.” He also notes it’s based on exactly the same architecture as NVIDIA’s GeForce Titan GPU, which has been well received.

In terms of the next Project Shield console, Huang says we should expect a new device roughly the same time we see a new Tegra chipset from NVIDIA. Essentially, he’s telling us that their gaming console is meant to showcase the Tegra chip, so we’ll be excited to see the tandem of new NVIDIA goodies next year.

With the likes of Qualcomm and their Snapdragon franchise taking off, NVIDIA has had a rough go getting their latest and greatest to catch on. Their Tegra 4 and 4i went nearly unused by major OEMs domestically, but the Xiaomi Mi3 — which sold out in 90 seconds — is using it.
