A new newsreader app has recently landed in the Google Play Store. The app is called Press and brings the tagline of “Simply Read News.” And well, that seems to sum up the use case. Diving a bit deeper though and we see an app that comes with a nice feature set and what we would consider nice looks.

First and foremost, the app is not free. And while we realize that may be a turn off for some — the app is low priced at $1.99. A note on the price though, that is said to be an “introductory price to celebrate our launch.” No word as to the regular price which means that now is as good a time as any to buy.

Pricing aside, Press is available in the Google Play Store and currently sitting at version 1.0.2 with support for devices running Android 4.0 or later. In our quick test, the app looks and works nice on both a tablet and smartphone. Otherwise, before we dive into the feature list, lets get the other catch out of the way — the Press app syncs with (and requires you to have a) Google Reader account.

That being said, if the fact that a Google Reader account is required and a $1.99 price point didn’t turn you away, here is what you can expect from Press. The features include offline reading support, a clean reading environment, swipe navigation, image zooming, the ability to change the size and style of the font, the option to share articles or save them for later and having articles open in either the app or your default browser. Finally, this is probably not as surprising given that Press is a paid app, but you can expect to find no ads.

  1. With hundreds of articles to read across about 100 feeds, not having some kind of continuous scroll through option makes using this app very difficult. You have to click individually each article in your feed to view it.

Google Reader on android may not be pretty, but it works well. As does Feedly.
