In December 2014, Panasonic came out with the Lumix DMC-CM1, its first smartphone-camera that had specs like a flagship smartphone (at that time) and a gorgeous and huge Leica lens straddling the back of the smartphone. It was so much so that you’d be confused what the primary use was for – smartphone or photography. At the CP+ photography and imaging trade show in Japan tomorrow, Panasonic is set to unveil the Lumix DMC-CM10, which seems like a direct upgrade to the earlier model.

Sources have come out with early photos of the DMC-CM10, and from the looks of it, the device still carries the aesthetic and design of the CM1. Users are hoping for upgrades in specs and features of course – most people are hoping there are better mics for video, a more powerful LED flash, and a better version of Android as the OS.

If you remember the CM1, it was no slouch in the way it was designed. Aside from the 20.1MP f/2.8 Leica camera module, it had a 4.7-inch FullHD (1080p) LCD screen, powered by a then-current Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor and 2GB RAM. It had 16GB internal storage and microSD expansion of up to 128GB. The CM1 was released with Android 4.4 Kitkat, but was upgradable to Android 5.0 Lollipop.

If Panasonic follows this spec line with a direct upgrade, expect the CM10 to be a good choice if you want to straddle the line between smartphone usage and serious photography. No details yet for this, but it shouldn’t be long now.
