Palringo launches on Android Market

24 March 2009 by Alison Spong

Palringo rich messaging has launched on the Android Market. Offering a list of communication tools, for all those instant messaging fans out there, this is pretty cool.

Palringo allows user to talk through AIM, Google Talk, MSN, Facebook, Yahoo! Messenger and other messaging services and social networks. There is the added ability to send photo messages. As well as share their location and proximity, displayed next to their status in the Palringo’s contacts list.

As listed through their website, Palringo offers user the ability to “vary your messages: use your phone like a walkie-talkie, or send a picture using your camera-phone, or just keep typing them if you prefer. Palringo is an instant messaging service that’s purpose-built for mobiles. But there’s also a version for Windows PCs and Apple Macs, so you’re in touch all the time.”

  1. how's the battery consumption?
  2. "mount and unmount filesystems" - huh?

    why would you need that?
  3. I had it with windows mobile, until it stopped working and they made it pay software. It's good stuff for free. But when they start charging on anddroid, they'll lose me again.
  4. It's a nice app - someone in the forums pointed it out before this post, so I grabbed it and have been playing with it a bit. As with most of the IM applications for Android, the connection continually drops, or has tough time re-connecting.

I noticed a few things at first glance that are problem-some:

1.) When you receive a message, you get a message notification. Clicking the notification (from the bar) does not bring you to the message, it brings you to the last screen you were in. Also with this same issue, a notification will show within the application, and you cannot click on it to view the message... You have to go back to the main window and select the message.

2.) It's... it could be me, but I restarted the phone after installing the application because I thought that would be the problem. But sometimes the application will "die" so-to-speak. Where you will become disconnected and know so by the icon up top showing a dimmed out person Icon. When you click on it to get back in, the app will show for a split second, and go back to the Home screen. You have to wait for a little bit to get back in, and even then you might encounter throttling issues.

3.) Just a random issue: I received a message from my buddy back east (i was logged into the Facebook messenger service and on my Laptop) and it showed up as my little cousin. Probably just a fluke.

I will say, however; that this application is great. I love the originzation of it. I like the little sound, I wish there was an actual options page for this to configure vibration (and correct me if i'm wrong) but I haven't noticed anything in this app about that just yet. There should be a little more in terms of contextual menus, and the ability to paste your location in AIM or any other messenger aside the Palringo one. I do like the fact that I can send pictures from GTalk now, my girlfriend can do it from her GTalk on her Blackberry, and thought it was rather interesting that a Google OS wouldn't have a version of their app where you couldn't send pictures.

All in all the app is awesome....
  5. Hi, I've no info on exact battery life impact. But, Palringo is a mobile app, designed for mobiles (i.e., not a desktop app modified for mobile) so battery life is conserved as best it can be.

Um, you must have Palringo confused with something else. Palringo has always been free, still is. It's never been a paid-for application.

  7. @Ward, thanks for your comments. I'm going to send them to the dev team for checking out.

  8. I restarted my phone and I had to go into the software to log in, I'm never going to remember to do that each time so it's effectively useless for me as I'll never be logged in!
if it can log me in to all my services on a restart then I will pass on the site to other people as a way to contact me but there's no point as it is

    No Problem.

I noticed that when you become logged out of the Palringo you have a hard time opening the application back up. I selected the little P from the task bar thing this morning and it will flash in and out of the app. Did it like... 5 times, then selected it from the desktop to open, and it went in.

If i see anything else, I'll respond again.

    Hey Tim,

Thanks so much for being here to respond to our questions and suggestions - It's a great example of what we all wanted to see when choosing Android as our next phone / toy platform.

My questions before I download is: how much advertisements are there, and are the ads at all targeted or personalized, if any?

Thanks, and good luck on the new platform.

  11. It would be the BEST IM APP if it didnt kick me out every 10 minutes.. fix that and ya got a keeper.. its great that the facebook chat is included...
  12. Does the instant messaging use SMS or Data?
  13. I like it. Here are my issues.

Once you look at a message, no way of going back to that message.

If it disconnects, sometimes the black and white icon shows in notification bar and no way to remove that.

If it disconnects sometimes the dim man stays on also and no way to remove that without having to log back in.

Some nicer sounds and display options would be nice, other that that not to bad. Hope it gets a bit better.
  14. I would like an ability to log in and out of the entire service - or be able to kill the application without a kill -9. The problem is you get logged out of Palringo and cannot get back in because there is no option to log back in. You gotta wait a little bit to do it. And, it throttles my AIM account like 900 times a day... lol. Not that I care so much about AIM, but it throttles it to the point where I can't log back in

Tap on the lower right hand corner lets you logg off the program.
