Android 5.0 Jelly Bean could include WebTop-style desktop mode

And now, let us commence months of speculation on Android 5.0! Just a week after suppliers claimed that Android 5.0 "Jelly Bean" (which, by the way, has not been confirmed as a code name) would be popping up this summer, Russian blogger Eldar Murtazin claims that Google will be including a dockable desktop mode in the next version of Android. That's not too far from a reality right now - most Android phones can output their video via HDMI in some form, and Motorola's high-end phones can connect to LapDocks to use the packaged WebTop OS. But instead of a completely different OS, Android would simply adjust its user interface for desktop mode.

LG Optimus Vu revealed with stylus and LTE

LG has officially revealed the LG Optimus Vu, the company's new flagship for MWC 2012 next week and its stylus-toting challenge to Samsung's Galaxy Note. Based around an iPad-matching 1024 x 768 resolution, 4:3 aspect display, the 5-inch Optimus Vu "phablet" uses a 650 nits IPS LCD panel for better outdoor visibility, and comes with a stylus for annotating documents, drawing sketches and making handwritten notes in LG's Memo app.

Philips Soundbar streams DLNA Android content to any TV

In addition to a wide range of Fidelio speaker docks and Android-specific headphones, they've recently unveiled the Soundbar CSS5123. But this isn't just your run-of-the-mill all in one speaker system: the Soundbar packs in a DLNA receiver and video-out functionality. This means that even if your HDTV or projector doesn't pack in Digital Living Network Alliance support, you can add it with a swanky speaker set.

Apple’s Airplay comes to Google TV with Airtight app

Even at a site full of die-hard Android users, we're big enough to admit when a competing platform has a cool feature, and Airplay certainly falls in to that category. The feature allows iPhones and iPads to instantly stream video and audio to compatible devices, sort of like DLNA. Now that functionality has been extended to Google TV, by way of a GTV app known as Airtight. It's currently priced at 99 cents in the Android Market, though naturally you'll need Google TV hardware to see it.

Xperia arc S and Xperia neo V now available unlocked in the US

The latest in Sony's maddening experiments in non-capitalization are now available in the United States. The Xperia arc S and Xperia neo V are available from Sony's Ericsson's online store, and should start popping up at various retailers next month. For the moment, each are only available in their unlocked and full-priced forms.

LG confirms Optimus LTE heading to Bell in Canada

Late last month we mentioned that the Optimus LTE smartphone from LG was heading to Canada and would be landing on Bell. At the time, the thought was that the smartphone would be called the eye when it hit Bell. LG has confirmed that the Optimus LTE will be hitting Bell in Canada officially, but offers no firm launch date.

Qualcomm’s Skifta app streams video and manages your DLNA devices

Qualcomm-Atheros is making a cloud push in a big way with their new Skifta service and app. Skifta is a system for DLNA-certified devices that allows streaming media by way of your phone from either your phone or your home computer, giving you options that previously required separate apps. Built-in free content from the likes of Picasa, Revision 3 and TED Talks rounds out the package. Basically, Skifta (man, it's hard to find good non-copyrighted names these days) aims to be a one-stop-shop for all of your media, streaming easily to connected televisions, computers and speaker systems. Video, audio and photos are currently supported. Skifta works on DLNA and UPnP-compatible devices, including Windows 7 computers and the PlayStation 3. The promotional video lays it all out: [youtube ezP6Ee9HoRo] Skifta's a free download from the Android Market, and no, you don't need a Qualcomm processor inside your phone or tablet to use it. The software is in its 1.0 release, so there may very well be some compatibility or stability issues. But hey, it's free - what have you got to lose? This may be a good indication of similar systems from OEMs, like Motorola's upcoming MotoCast.

Samsung Galaxy Note already on sale in the Netherlands

My Dutch is a little rusty, but according to Tablets Magazine, at least two online retailers in the Netherlands have already begun to sell the Samsung Galaxy Note to eager gadget enthusiasts. Phone Shop and 2Call already have the 5.3-inch device in stock at a wallet-shredding 597 Euros ($832 USD). As far as we can tell, this is the first time that the Galaxy Note has been on-sale to the public.

HTC officially unveils EVO Design 4G with WiMAX

Not content to let Samsung and Motorola hog the limelight for long, HTC has revealed its latest entry in the EVO line. The HTC EVO Design 4G is a 4-inch Gingerbread phone packing WiMAX and world phone capabilities. The phone runs on a 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor, which combined with 768MB of RAM should be able to handle the 960 x 540 qHD screen nicely. The EVO Design 4G earns its name from its unibody aluminum construction, a trait it shares with some of HTC's slickest handsets like the Sensation. The press release mentions .47 inch (11.9mm) depth, about on par with other 4-inch smartphones, and considerably thinner than most WiMAX handsets. Some sacrifices had to be made - the 5 megapixel rear camera is midrange, and the 1520 mAh battery will likely take a beating when using the faster connection standard. HTC Sense 3.5, Watch DLNA certification and a 3G/4G mobile hotspot are included. Other features include the basic WiFi/Bluetooth/GPS combination, and the phone includes an 8GB MicroSD card, though internal storage is currently a mystery. The phone will go on sale this Sunday, October 23rd for $99 on a two-year contract, less $50 for the mail-in rebate. The pricing and size makes the HTC EVO Design 4G a suitable replacement for the EVO Shift 4G, so expect that phone to be discounted soon enough. [via SlashGear]

Sony’s Tablet S and Tablet P get Japanese 3G versions on October 28th

Sony's first entries into the Honeycomb tablet market, the creatively-named Tablet S and Tablet P, are getting mobile broadband versions in their home market. Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo will start selling 3G versions of both devices on October 28th. On this side of the Pacific, the Tablet S is only available in a WiFi version, and the dual-screen tablet P is still a complete no-show.
