It seems that Chinese manufacturer OPPO is really trying to build up the hype around its upcoming Find 7 smartphone. This close to the scheduled unveiling, the company has started sending out invitations to Chinese media and bloggers that isn’t what you’d call conventional.

OPPO is hardly the first one to send out an unorthodox format for an invitation, and it’s unlikely that it will be the last. Rival manufacturer Vivo also played up its XPlay 3S event by utilizing a bit of Augmented Reality (AR) in their invitation. OPPO’s version is somewhat not as sophisticated, but it isn’t less fancy and definitely more bulky.

OPPO sent out rather big boxes that contained a card with QR codes and what looked like a black pyramid enclosed in a black box frame. The recipient will have to scan the QR code to install the required app and then set the smartphone on top of the box facing down on the pyramid, following the directions displayed on the app. This practically turns the phone’s screen into a makeshift projector that then shows the video invitation on one side of the pyramid. Interesting, but somewhat wasteful. Aside from the bulk, this method also requires a dark environment to see the video, which in a way, does add an atmosphere of suspense.

The OPPO Find 7 is scheduled to go live on March 19th. The specs of the smartphone is almost all but known, with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 CPU, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage, and a 5.5-inch screen. What is yet to be confirmed is the rumor that the device will have two variants, one that has a 1920×1080 pixel resolution and another that boasts of 2560×1440 support.
