If you have a limited data plan and need to watch your spending closely, then you might want to turn off some of your apps that are working in the background even when you’re not using them. There are apps out there that can help you determine which are these data-hungry apps and then do something to stop them from eating up your allocation. Opera Max now has a Smart Alerts feature that will do that for you in order to help you save up on your allocated data.

According to an app-usage study conducted on millions of users who have Opera Max, 30% of their data is actually used by apps that are running in the background, with Facebook and Gmail being the top data eaters. In fact, 73% of these two apps’ data usage don’t happen when you’re using them, but when they’re idle and just updating in the background. Google Drive and WhatsApp are also big on that, with 50% of their data usage being spent updating when you’re doing other things.

The Smart Alerts feature on data management app Opera Max determines which of these apps are eating your data allocation while working in the background. But more than just telling you what apps, it gives you a way to manage them and with just two taps, you can actually block the apps from using your mobile data, if you want them to. The feature is triggered when the background data usage goes beyond 10MB every week. You will see these alerts as cards within Opera Max’ data usage timeline, app management and in the OS notification bar. If Opera Max detects heavier than usual data activity, you will get a pop-up message.

You can update your Opera Max app to enjoy this new Smart Alerts feature. But if you’re not using the app yet, you can download it for free from the Google Play Store.
