OnePlus‘ first smartphone caused a bit of a sensation, both in a good and in a bad way, but its utility has so far been quite limited. But now with an official TWRP recovery image available for the OnePlus One, the Android community will be able to gird their loins and finally put the smartphone to the custom ROM test.

The OnePlus One might be, on the surface, just like any other high-end flagship these days. After all, it does come with a 2.5 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801, 3 GB of RAM, 16 or 32 GB of storage, a 5.5-inch 1080p screen, a 13 megapixel camera capable of stitching together a 50 megapixel photo, just to name a few. However, the real deal here is the price tag, which comes at just $349 for the largest storage configuration, definitely not something you see everyday.

However, as far as Android devices go, the OnePlus One’s “hackability” hasn’t exactly been as impressive. That now changes with the arrival of TWRP recovery for the smartphone, opening the doors for mods and custom ROMs to come and take the device for a more adventurous spin. This version of TWRP is official, meaning it is going to be supported with fixes and new features coming from the TWRP developers. As for features, it comes with everything that TWRP 2.7 offers, including better graphics, mouse support via USB OTG, and a newer version of SuperSU.

Now the biggest problem that remains is the availability of the the device, which has so far been extremely limited. The company has just announced its second wave of invites, but it hasn’t yet disclosed when it plans to make this highly affordable high end smartphone available to an even wider audience.

    Aside from that, given its currently-limited availability, good to see the dev community is going strong for the device. Makes me hopeful that it’ll be supported by 3rd party roms beyond the 2 years of CM official support
