Whenever you see a delicious new feature in another manufacturer’s Android, more often than not you’re simply left drooling and hopeless. Luckily for those who have been taken by OmniROM‘s pumped up task switcher slash app dock OmniSwitch, that is not the case.

Last week, OmniROM shared the birth of a new experimental feature that blended your usual task switching features with that of a “favorites” floating dock. OmniSwitch was, of course, initially designed for use by OmniROM but the developers, true to their open source leanings, made its source code available to the public. Luckily, this has resulted in someone taking that code and making it available to the rest of the world.

Credit goes to XDA developer EatHeat who took that source code and made it work not just on OmniROM or Android 4.4 but on any device running Android 4.0 and latter. It might even work on Android 3.0 Honeycomb with some tweaking, but don’t hold your breath. The result is OmniSwitch running on any Android device in all its glory, with all the features working and intact. Well, almost all the features. You can read here what those features are in case you’re interested in taking this utility for a spin.

It turns out, however, that there is one major feature that isn’t working on OmniSnitch. It cannot kill apps, which makes two out of five action buttons on OmniSnitch completely useless. However, this is blamed on a limitation on the Android platform itself. The only solution to have this working again is to include OmniSnitch, either as source code or as a pre-installed app, in a custom ROM, which unfortunately leaves out the rest of those who prefer running their stock firmware.
