Tough luck for a small portion of Notion Ink Adam preorder customers this weekend, with the news that they’ll have to wait until around Valentine’s day before they get their Android tablet. The company has confirmed that the accidental touchscreen damage experienced by some units during transit, coupled with the Chinese New Year holidays, means a slightly longer than expected delay before replacement parts can be arranged.

Notion Ink says just 5.31-percent of pre-order customers have been affected – everybody else got a far nicer “shipment confirmation” email instead – but as you might expect that’s led to some disappointed would-be tableteers. One has forwarded on the email he received, which you can read below.

We understand that you have been eagerly waiting for the arrival of
your Adam. However, we regret to inform you that a fraction of our
touch-screens got damaged during transportation due to which your
shipment has been effected.

The Chinese New Year holidays that are in the first week of February
further add to the delay. However, our touchscreen partner, Sintek,
have agreed to work through the holidays and deliver the screens as
soon as possible. We are afraid that until we receive these
touchscreens, your device would not be ready for shipment.

      • Then if you wish to buy one I would sincerely advise you to wait until it is stocked in a major high street chain.

        That way you won’t be on the eternal waiting game and lying train that we have endured, and maybe if it’s a faulty unit you would have some comeback.

        Honestly I cannot stress the above enough don’t get Blinded by the NI Hype

        12 months ago it was a great specced tablet more than anyone else’s offerings and had some innovation. however that innovation has vanished, i.e rear track pad, matt screen. currently the gps don’t work (no lock) and the software is Buggy so much even inspiron41 has dumped it for another launcher he has also rooted the device. so the basic Adam is NOT what you Think.

        the only remaining unique features are pixel qi in a tablet and full GPS which does NOT work. not worth taking your hard earned cash and risking it on a startup that appears to be failing.

  1. Yeah… this is too much at this point. I’m not going to get one of these. It pains me to say it since I’ve been watching it since it was announced. Now, with ALL of these crazy issues – idk. I’ll wait till mid year when they’ve hammered out the bugs / shipping and all that jive; maybe.

  2. Small percentage my ass. That’s right up there with the ‘only 50 got their date moved from the 8th to the 15th-22nd.’ It’s a HUGE percentage and yet there are those who were ‘pre-poned’ to January who are getting their Adams shipped *earlier* than they were first told. WTH???

  3. I was one of the lucky ones. Estimated delivery date was the 29-th, email confirmation of shipment on the 30th morning and I am already contacted by the courier. I do feel sorry for all those fans of Adam whose shipment of their pre-order got postponed till the 14-th of feb. Must be really disappointing, but soon they will have the best tablet currently available in their hands 🙂

      Your all over NI blog. Are you trying to bet Greg as the biggest fanboi? Currently the best tablet? Have even read any of the users who got it, they had to root it get it actually usable. It buggy as hell and that is the best table on the market.

      • I still dont see any better specs compared to NI which are out there in market. I see a lot of potential with the company which is a startup and learning by doing. I think given the level of their innovation, no one can stop them from being successful. As far as customer service is concerned, they are learning and I think in next 1 year they will be the best. The reason is that so many people are helping them to learn by criticing etc.

  4. I was part of the original February group that got bumped up, then delayed again, so I can only imagine just how much more pissed off the people who’ve been shafted with multiple delays since January 9th must be.

    Still, I was willing I to continue buying into NI’s latest batch of weekly mea culpa malarkey in light of somehow feeling good to be supporting the “little startup that could.” In hindsight, it was probably because I hadn’t had the displeasure of having to deal with their much-vaunted and supremely capable customer service before.

    Now that I had to learn about this latest setback from a fellow gadget fan this morning rather than with an NI customer service email overnight, I’m right up against the edge of trying to get as much of my money back as possible or to calm down and just wait for this little bundle of hate and ineptitude to finally slog its way to my doorstep…

    …just so I can turn it around on eBay to practice what NI taught me this winter and hustle someone else still drinking the Kool-Aid.

      • When I preordered back in December it was 5% at the time of purchase.

        BUT

        Fast forward nearly 2 months later, I can’t find anything on NI’s website regarding preorder policy, so it won’t surprise me if this amount doubles or triples. I mean, we’ve already seen NI revise and backtrack before with how they handled the language on their return policy during preorders:

        Most troubling is that last bit of there being a 75% slash in the refunded amount if NI deems you “tampered” with your Adam prior to returning it. So if they ship me a dud PixelQi screen device, like some YouTube reviewers have received, there’s no way I can fully recuperate through the eBay route and I would have to risk being railroaded into getting only ~$135 back with their dodgy customer service.

        I can’t believe something that tiny isn’t linked onto the PREORDER CONFIRMATION page though. Coincidence? Who knows at this point as a ton of us are seeing red right now.

        Furthermore, I see that NI has changed their return policy YET AGAIN. Now I stand to lose ALL of my refund if I get saddled with a dud and can’t prove my case it hasn’t been manhandled. And that’s if I can get a hole of someone within 7 days of getting the device; I’m currently on day FIVE waiting on someone over there to get back an email sent regarding a completely different matter.

        Simply astounding, I just canceled a few seconds ago so that I stand a better chance of them actually knowing about it by next weekend.

      • Look at google’s failure when they tried to sell nexus one directly.
        With billions in cash, their efforts resulted in little success. In
        the end, nexus s is being sold through best buy. How the hell does a
        tiny company like NI operating on shoe string budget expect to be
        successful? At the end of the say, early adopters pay the price. It’s
        an eye opening truth.

      • Too true man, I guess I’ll be taking trying to take this hard-learned lesson, and whatever funds I can recover, all the way to the bank…

        …and hopefully fling it another company who can actually deliver an honest-to-goodness physical device without being beat out by the Pony Express. I suspect the next time I or any of my friends look to Notion Ink for anything will be for when we need a long, good, deep laugh.

      • I started to look into other options and came across Toshiba Tablet (USB, mini-USB,SD, a replaceable battery etc.). Do you have any opinion about it or Toshiba itself?

      • Toshiba is a reputable company. Got to play with their android tablet
        on @androids 2.2 not honeycomb or 2.3. Most like their tablets will be
        sold through a carrier. At that point you’ll go through the carrier or
        best buy Pr who ever if you run into problems. And yes, standard rerun
        policy :).

  5. I’d definitely agree. Form the time I had with the Adam it really wasn’t as impressive as public opinion led me to believe. It’s definitely stuck in 2010.

  6. It seems like im always a part of the 5%. I ordered my tablet 10 minutes after they started taking orders and my ship date was the end of Dec. Now its Feb 14th. They took the money off my Amex 2 days after i ordered it.I didnt even get a email telling me why. Im starting to think scam! Im calling Amex today and getting them to reverse the charge based on non compliance. If they wait much longer, people are going to jump over to the Motorola Zoom.

    • As others on NI’s blog have jokingly/truthfully remarked, it’s more likely that the 5.31% actually refers to the portion of orders that have been filled.

      I for one will follow your lead in a few more days if NI doesn’t get back to me. Either they have some kind of corporate directive inclined toward apathy to let people seethe then hopefully calm down or, more likely, they have a woefully undermanned response team during a time in which communication should be the highest priority. Both of these are hallmarks of a company whose disorganization I’d rather not affiliate my hard-earned money with.

  7. I’m one of the “50” people who Rohan and NI constantly try to dick over. So far it’s been nothing but lies from the NI side. I’m saddened that this is an Indian company as it think it undermines my country and my heritage. I wish I could even say I can’t recommend the ADAM as if now I haven’t even gotten mine despite the initial estimate delivery of Jan 9th. All I can say at this point is that this is the WORST experience I’ve had with any delivery or electronic purchase including pre-order.

  8. Can we sue Rohan shriven of Notion ink and his partner in USA Greg from Utah. How can I proceed with the lawsuite against a company like Notion ink. Is there any consumer forum or government website which deals with that. Notion has is run by liars, I can’t believe they fooled so many people into thinking that their lies will be taken as truth. This 5% thing is all BS. Also that Greg guy is hand in glove with Rohan Shravan. He is now saying that he can’t make a video of Adam nexus he is busy with his work and family, I say that is a load of Lies. When he can write a big essay on this blog why can,t he make a small 2 min video. Till he got his Adam he used to be online everyday with a slogan of being an Adam addict, I can’t understand whe that addiction went. I think his Adam also had issues with screen,and the Eden software. He is still waiting for a new Adam from Notion ink so that he can make a video to fool more people into thinking that the trashy tablet works. He was dreaming of becoming CEO of Notion ink, the North American chapter, but Alas the Liar Rohan from India shattered his dream with his lies.

    • I don’t know the background of what may be true and what a lie or a truth that couldn’t have been fulfilled, but if Greg works the way I do than I can fully understand that there is a large different between putting a 20 – 40 lines blog entry than to record a video and prepare it for internet community, to upload it etc. etc. – any blog entry can be made during your midday break. But taking a video will surely need more time and arrangements.

      Have you seen Greg’s unboxing video? It was of quite a better quality than “Mada’s” unboxing video although both were shot in Full HD. Anyway, I don’t know what’s right or wrong behind all this, and if you lean back and think about it, you have to admit that you don’t know as well. All you can do is assume. But that does note help.

    Do you remember the picture of the Indian Telephone system floating around the internet, representing the Indian call centers? The mass of wires all strung together, going every which way. That is what I imagine the inside of a Adam to look like. This is how I envision the operations of N.I.

    That is why you don’t buy from some start-up in India, or any country for that matter, unless you don’t care about the possibility of losing your money, or part of it.

    I can’t tell if NI is legit or not. They may fold like a house of cards tomorrow. There are FAR more questions then answers at this point. This so called “NotionInkFan” Greg is just trying to set himself up for something bigger. Maybe the head dude for “NI USA”. It is obvious that he is turning a blind eye to the issues of the product, and his word should be taken lightly. His only problem with his Adam was the camara had a protective film on it, and he couldn’t remove it. Please………

    Why don’t any of the major tech blogs have an Adam yet? Engadget, TechCrunch, Gizmodo, Slashgear? None. Becuase the last people on earth you want to get ahold of a inferior product is a techblog.

    Why doesn’t NI have a proper forum on their website? I could throw one up in 5 minutes, and totally free of charge. At least they could set up some kind of techsupport forum to post fixes.

    Why all these pre-orders? You can only have ONE pre-order special. Once you release the product for general consumption, you can’t keep having pre-orders. Once they fulfill the preorders, it’s call “OUT OF STOCK”, or they better get a front end store on their website, or start shipping to real stores.

    I wouldn’t buy one of these devices(U.S.), until they start to show up at a brick and mortar store. Unless you don’t care about throwing away your money. I’m calling shenanigans on Notion Ink and the Adam tablet. They’ve totally screwed the pooch on just about every way to release a product.

  11. There is so much more to this, than meets even the collective eye.

    First off, I’m one of the “lucky” “5.31%”. “Lucky” because, yeah, I’ve still got nothing to show for my $600 bucks. “5.31%” because if that number is real, judging by the number of unique posts on the blogs at notioninkhacks.com, notioninkfan.com, notionaddicts.com and even notionink.com, then NI had to have sold somewhere north of 1,000,000 tablets.

    Since day one, there have been delays. Delays we can handle. But also since day one, there has been piss poor communication. That’s not so easy to swallow.

    We were promised trackpads. There won’t be any. We were promised matte screens. Nope, we’ll get matte screen protectors, and we’ll have to put them on ourselves, thank you very much. Those of us who waited with bated breath, and jumped on the preorder, were given an early January ship date. That got pushed back because it was a “computer glitch”. We swallowed that. Then we were given new dates. Those got pushed back while we waited for the FCC approval. We ate that, too. Now, it’s cracked touchscreens. And he’s even pre-built himself an excuse, making sure we all know that the factory is going to open during Chinese New Year, just to get our screens done.

    I’m thinking the grass around Notion Ink headquarters is thick, lush, tall and green, given the unadulterated and copious amounts of bull$hit being spread around. Would they ship Adam tablets to people whose payments were delayed, not once or even twice, but 4 times?

    They asked for our faith, and we gave it. They asked for our money, and we gave that, too. Then they asked for our patience. And again. And again. And again. When do we get rewarded for all that we’ve given? Some people can’t even get the lousy email. And nobody has gotten anything even close to an apology. Instead, Rohan and company laugh their way to the bank at our expense.

    Here’s the thing. This delay is an important one to Notion Ink – it takes all the preorder customers outside the timeframe in which they can successfully get their credit card companies to issue a chargeback. We’re already hearing that cancellations are subject to a 5% transaction fee. It’s not enough for the greedy startup to take out an interest free loan from its believers and customers, and reap the interest of leaving millions of dollars in the bank for a couple of months, they have the nerve and audacity to try and charge people who want out.

    Looking to cancel your order? Yeah, good luck with that anyway. Emails to either support@notionink.com or perordersupport@notionink.com routinely go unanswered. If you want to cancel, do yourself a favor and call the credit card company, and have them issue a chargeback. Not only will this get you your money back (and in full, mind you), but if enough people do it, the credit card companies in question will refuse payments to Notion Ink, and that will hit them where it really hurts.

    We’re all angry, and disappointed, and hurt. We all want feedback, but get none. We all want Notion Ink and Rohan Shravan to be held accountable. The unfortunate part of this is that it looks increasingly less likely that is going to happen as time goes on, and the excuses keep rolling in.

    If Notion Ink, or Rohan Shravan have an issue with this post, I openly encourage them to answer it. But at this point, I’m sure they are far too busy planning the next excuse for the people whose hard earned money they’ve stolen.

    I too have been blinded by the faith in NI to deliver a great product ,and a great customer experience ,that unfortuntely does not appear to be the case.

    Rohan has shown himself to MODIFY the Truth ( perhaps the fanbois wont flame me for that ) on far to many occasions. and if his counting and percentage calculations are as bad as he demonstrates, then the business cannot possibly survive sa he must think there are millions in the bank when in fact there are tens.

    perhaps you all think $600 dollars in my case, is an acceptable Risk / loss, unfortunately for a married man with three children this is not a risk i took lightly, but one i now find myself having to reclaim.

    had my item shipped this morning (or yesterday as it is now) then perhaps i could have kept up the good fight and defended the name of NI. but as Rohan saw fit to string us along and mis-inform yet again, the straw on this camels back was broken.

    I have 4 emails i have sent over the last 12 hours (none of which have been replied to) by notion ink, another Red Flag that customer service is currently and most likely going to be non existant.

    next red flags, people with issues not really being listened too and replied to (unless greg puts a word in with the CEO) Really come on whats that about.

    anyway it’s nearly 11pm here and the cancellation will go ahead tomorrow (unless there is a miracle overnight and Rohan ships my ADAM as promissed) I just hope there is enough money in the coffers to pay me back, and I also hope NI have the decency to refund as quickly as it was taken in december, without any so called cancellation fee.”

  13. Good news for anyone who put this product on their Amex. You have 60 days to disput the charges. that Puts me at the 16th of February. Notion has only got 1 more chance with me.Amex said that if they had that many delays that it would void the original agreement and you would be intitled to your full refund from them.So get your money back today and run, or give them one more shot and your still covered.

  14. Chris you really need to do some more research into this, you make it sound all rosy and only a SMALL percentage are affected, well that is WRONG.

    people wise it is over 160 and that is only those that post in one website ? if this were taken as possibly even 50% of those affected then 320 being 5.31% the figures just do not add up even APPLE cant sell that many Tablets in a month

    I am one of the people who bought into this whole mess. I would recommend to everyone who decided to cancel, that you should just work with your credit card company. I have 5 emails showing the progression of this company continually pushing our orders back and that will be enough for you to prove that this company didnt provide a product that you paid for. I discussed this situation with Amex today and they told me that it wouldnt be a problem based on how many times they have pushed thigs out.
    Dont give them 1 penny for your frustration.
