Nokia smartphones running Android were a thing, at least behind closed doors with Nokia engineers, well before Microsoft bought them out. As the days pass and we can all stop dreaming about a Nokia Lumia smartphone running Android, news today is stating the company was dabbling with Android, but we all know now that it will never happen.

According to the New York Times Nokia engineers had developed and been testing multiple smartphones running Google’s Android. Can you imagine that 1020 and a 41 megapixel camera running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Sounds awesome right? Too bad that will never happen, unless Newkia has anything to say.

The report goes as far as to mention that Android-powered Nokia Lumia phones existed all over the place internally “well before” the discussions even started with Microsoft. Nokia hasn’t done as well as they hoped, and lost the top spot for smartphone shares a few years back, and obviously Android could have been their way back.

Not only did Microsoft know they were running these tests internally, but they claim that wasn’t a part of the discussion before the acquisition of the huge manufacturer and mobile company. Nokia had until the end of 2014 to decide what they wanted, and after that it was fair game to start developing for Android, but the buyout ended that dream real quick.

Hopefully one day a few of those engineers will throw their Lumia smartphones with Android up on eBay, and some lucky soul will snatch it up. For now though, it will be all Windows Phone moving forward.

  1. Never say never. There was a point once when Office did not run on Macs. Then they bribed the boss at Apple to kill whatever was the equivalent of Office on the Mac. No leader is immune to corruption. They may even die rich from it…
