If you were waiting for news of when the Meizu Pro 5 mini will be arriving in the market, then you finally have your answer now: probably never. Officials from the Chinese OEM have confirmed through popular local social media Weibo that they will no longer be able to continue with production of their flagship’s mini version as a recent earthquake in Taiwan has caused much damage to their resources, to the point that production has to be halted.

The rumored mini version of their current flagship was supposed to have a 4.7-inch display (1080×190 resolution) and powered by deca-core MT6797 CPU from MediaTek. It was also supposed to have 32GB and 64GB of internal storage, but all that seems to be gone now. It was their VP of technology Li Nan himself who said on Weibo that yes, they were actually working on the mini version (the first time there was confirmation) but unfortunately, they have to stop working on it now.

The reason for this is that some of the essential parts in the production were affected by the recent earthquake in Taiwan. Some Meizu resources were severely damaged and so they have had to either postpone production or indefinitely cancel the whole Meizu Pro 5 Mini and instead focus on the next flagship, which will probably be the Pro 6.

The good news for Meizu is that they had a steady growth rate last year and were able to ship more than 20 million smartphones. This bodes well for them as they try to compete with Xiaomi and the likes, and they have an advantage as they already sell outside of China unlike their competitors.
