The reports surrounding ASUS and Google’s next-gen Nexus 7 2 have been scattered, but today we’re hearing again that the release date for their tablet could be the end of July. After being a no-show at Google I/O, the rumors have been circulating almost weekly. We’ve heard July more than once, and even late August, but the newest report from “insiders” claims it will be here very soon.

How soon you ask? Right around the corner because their insider sources claim that it will be revealed and released “in the coming weeks.” The report claims that Google and ASUS will release the new Nexus 7 2 the last week of July, or in the first week of August.

The tablet will reportedly be a huge jump over the previous model. Coming in with a 1920 x 1080p full HD display, an upgraded Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor at 1.9 GHz, 2GB of RAM, and this time sporting dual cameras. Of course the thought has always been it would be released with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, but at this point, we’re not so sure.

According to DigiTimes, who is accurate at times, the tablet will arrive with a $199 price point. As well as a $249 option both in WiFi. We’ve heard this before, and are assuming a 16GB model will be $199, with a slightly higher 32GB flavor also being available. Their inside reporter also claims over 6 million Nexus 7’s have been sold, and Google’s hoping for roughly 8 million this time around.

With strong competition from others like Acer, HP, and Lenovo the sales might take a slight hit. For the most part however, none of their devices will match the specs of the ASUS and Google built Nexus 7 2, and we don’t see them stealing too many sales. Hopefully Google gets serious and drops some information in the next week or two. We’re counting on it!

    • Google would be well-served to get this thing out as quickly as possible. Right now every other next-gen 7″ tablet seems likely to be released in the far distant future. Many are eager to drop 2 C-notes or a little more to upgrade what we have on something, but if Google and ASUS wait until the ipad mini or another android-based device starts to steal the attention sales will be weaker. Case in point, the Verizon version of the HTC one. Released a month ago this might have broken sales records, now that we all know other devices are on the way it’s likely to only be marginally successful even if it were released tomorrow. Get this thing out in the next two weeks and you may hit 8 million. Wait a month and my guess is that number will be far lower.

    • This isn’t the first time we’ve heard late July, so it’s a bit of a confirmation. More than just a “quiet friday” haha.

  1. Like most ppl .. I was gonna wait and buy iPad because it “just works”. But u gotta use the nexus to believe me how good it is. Smooth as a butter and it’s actually a complete PC. My geeky friend showed me there is something called as floating app in nexus which is actually an app running like a windows app with a min , max , close button on the upper right corner.

  2. Snappy 600, 1080p, seems logical, snappy 800 would be better, with its UD background graphics capabilities and LTE Advanced, still, take my money, take my money now !!! : ).
