Google is not one to simply rest on its laurels now that it has just announced both Android 4.4 KitKat and Nexus 5. The company has just put up the factory image and binary drivers for its newest smartphone, which should give tinkerers and modders something to play with while waiting for their devices to arrive.

In case you’ve been offline or disconnected for the past couple of hours, you might have missed the storm that has hit the Internet when Google finally pulled off the veils from its much awaited products. Although after the countless tips and leaks, much of the Nexus 5‘s specs are no longer a surprise. Still, it’s quite comforting to see much of our expectations fulfilled, like the 2.3 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 with an Adreno 330 graphics chip, 2 GB of RAM, 16 or 32 GB internal storage options, and 8 megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilization (OIS). Google even threw in some nice surprises, like the built-in wireless charging and Bluetooth LE.

While the device itself is already quite amazing, it is made even more so by the shiny new Android 4.4 running on it. While the latest Android version does run on this high-end piece of hardware, Google has made sure that it will run smooth as butter on devices that have just a fraction of the power. As the first device running Android 4.4 KitKat, the Nexus 5 will be the first to enjoy and show off the software’s benefits, such as the new SMS integration that has just been added to Hangouts.

Google has now released the Nexus 5 factory image, which contains Android 4.4, even before the smartphone, whose 16 GB variant has quickly sold out, ships to its new owners. It should be noted that no other Nexus device has any Android 4.4 image available, but that should change once Google starts rolling out updates for those.
