According to scuttlebut at the Google Launchpad conference, we’ll see the Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 launched Tuesday, October 15th. Google Launchpad is a ”two-week boot camp for early stage start-ups helping with subjects including user interface, product strategy & technology, marketing, business development and more,” and sponsored by Google for Entrepreneurs.

Here at Android Community, we’ve been wondering if we’d see the Nexus 5 launch without an event. Google usually sends out invites at least 10 days in advance, and they’ve been eerily quiet. They could be hosting another of their manicured events, where invites go to a very small group of journalists, but even at that, we would think we’d have heard something. Of course, they could just be launching later this month or early next, too.

It wouldn’t shock us to find the Nexus 5 announced via the Android Blog on Tuesday, considering they had to do the same for the Nexus 4 due to Hurricane Sandy wanting to attend the event in New York. Even at that, Nexus devices are flagship handhelds for Google, and meant to be the barometer for the Android world. The same could be said for the newest HP Chromebook, and while another of Google’s manicured events, it got a nice little party.

According to a variety of sources, this news is just floating around the Launchpad, and not coming from one particular developer at the conference. As for validity, we’re on the fence. Without news of an official event, we’re inclined to be open to the possibility. Whenever it ends up happening, make sure you have both money and patience; I think we all remember the debacle that was the Nexus 4 launch.

  1. Well, not at least 10 days in advance as the N7 this year was unveiled only 7 days after the invites were sent. But yeah, if nothing goes out today, I’d doubt these rumors.

  2. This Tuesday the 15th launch date is highly unlikely. People need time to travel to get to the event. It is unlikely that Google would send the invites out less than a week before the event. Today is pretty much over so the earliest we would see invites sent out is tomorrow which would only leave 4 days until the event if it is on the 15th.

  3. Google would be crazy to not use all kinds of marketing they can get for this thing. Lack of marketing meant that the Nexus 4 (while being sold out often enough) never appeared anywhere near the top in sales charts. In fact it’s so rare that you hardly ever see one in the wild. If Google wants to change that it needs to spread the word by all means. Quietly releasing the Nexus 5 would be idiotic.

OK, or Google just wants to get their Android out to developers and that’s what the Nexus phones are for. Which also would explain the low-end camera and battery life – devs don’t need a good camera and battery life is fairly unimportant too.

I was very excited back then about the Nexus 4 but then reality kicked in. If the Nexus 5 is a good all-day smartphone with THAT kind of specs nobody would even think of giving it away for that kind of money. It would destroy the market for nothing.

I’m surely looking forward to it, but with caution. A $299 full-HD high-quality 5″ smartphone with a Snapdragon 800 and guaranteed updates? Too good to be true.

  4. The Nexus 4 was fantastic value for the money. I have no problem with the battery life, or the camera – I get a full days use, and my camera shots look great. If I had to make a single complaint about the Nexus 4, its that the glass back was just too slippery. I had to buy the bumper just to stop it from sliding off surfaces that I would swear were flat! Maybe the speaker could be a little better too, but aside from that – no issues, no problems, no gripes – nothing. I love my Nexus 4, and am looking forward to the Nexus 5 with great anticipation.

    • Love the glass back on my N4. Feels great in my hands, doesn’t slip anywhere except the seat of my car. Orb and bumper were let downs for me.

      • poetic bumper cases are better than the original that’s sold in the play store. they come in a few nice colors too…
