I am a big netbook fan, but when it comes to any computer be it my desktop or my netbook I really want Windows. For all the good and bad that comes with Windows, at least I know that I can get the software I need on my computer.

With return rates on netbooks using alternative OS’ much higher than Windows netbooks, the average consumer feels about the same. I do like the idea of being able to try something like Android on a netbook and having Windows there so I can use my Office software or other applications when I need to.

The Taiwanese government-funded Institute for Information Industry was showing a reference design for a netbook at Computex that shipped with both Windows and Android installed. The little rig runs on Android, but when the user opens a program for Windows, XP automatically opens and pushed Android to the sides of the screen.

The netbook’s hardware includes an x86 1.6GHz Via C7 CPU, Wi-Fi, a 7.6-inch screen and a 533MHz Samsung processor with an Arm core for running Android. Pricing is unknown, but according to a rep, the machine would cost about $50 more to make than a normal netbook.
