You heard us talk about the Neptune Duo recently, with the gadget makers proposing to make the smartwatch as the “Hub” of the duo rather than the “normal” other way around. Now Neptune has expanded this project, augmenting its smartwatch Hub with five more gadgets (including the original Pocket Screen) and proposing a whole new way we use our gadgets.

Central to all of these is still the Hub, a wrap-around, water-resistant smartwatch with a 2.4-inch capacitive touchscreen, capable of 3G/LTE connections with nano-SIM cards, powered by a 1.8Ghz quad-core processor and runs Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box. Then you have the aforementioned “Pocket Screen” and an additional “Tablet Screen,” which basically expands the display and capabilities of your smartwatch using the new super-fast, short-range wireless standard 802.11ad WiGig.

Then, some new additions include a keyboard that can turn the tablet into a notebook of sorts; a dongle with HDMI output that will let you push data from the hub to other screens (quite like Google’s Chromecast); and a set of wireless headphones that also serve as wireless chargers – and a necklace.

With the new WeGig wireless protocol, Neptune assures 7Gb per second short range connections without noticeable latency, although that still has to be proven. Neptune is probably the first company willing to take such a huge risk to bring true personal computing to everybody. The suite runs on the assumption that almost all places you go to will have a screen of sorts that you can “own” and push content to. If not, then you have you Pocket and Tablet dumbscreens, depending on what task you are doing.

It doesn’t seem such a crazy idea as before, but it still takes a huge leap of the imagination to see that this will become a proper trend. Neptune is already seeing to it that this will happen, as the Indiegogo campaign has already gotten seven times its original target of USD$100,000 from crowdfunding. All these gadgets will still be relatively cheap when it starts selling for USD$899 for the whole Suite. Early backers will get the whole package for USD$599.

This is a crowdfunded project, and as such may not deliver what its creators initially promise. Most crowdfunding sites, like Kickstarter and Indiegogo, have policies about what happens to your money if the project fails to deliver on its goals, but choosing to back a project is inevitably a risk. Android Community’s reporting on crowdfunded projects should in no way be seen as an endorsement, unless specifically stated, and we recommend closely examining the terms and conditions to understand your individual rights as a backer before making a pledge.

  1. A possibly super cool gadget. It could possibly change the landscape.
I like the injection of all the pre order dollars pledged into the campaign.
Definitely something I will consider if I decide to launch a crowdfunding campaign.
