I bet you thought our hands-on with the Motorola PHOTON 4G was done, didn’t you? Turns out there were a few more videos in our camera that we’d been working on when we were totally kicked out of the event because they had to get ready for Spinal Tap to play at the venue. Bummer! Good news for you, we’ve still got the video and you’re about to see it. This is a hands-on with several items: the Car Dock, the Multimedia Dock, and the new version of Motorola’s Webtop functionality. Have a peek and let us know what you think!

What you’re going to see here is a car dock that attaches to your vehicle’s dash with a suction cup, then holds the device in place with gravity and a little bit of a clamp. While there is a microUSB port popping out of this dock, it does nothing more than physically activating the car dock mode for the device – you’re out of luck if you’d like to have your PHOTON charging while you’re getting directions with this piece of hardware. On the other hand it is certainly a relatively new situation seeing the manufacturer pushing the in-car functionality like this, certainly a gamble given that docks such as these are illegal in several places in the country because of reckless use. What do you think? Will you use the dock?

Next you’ll see a dock you should already be rather familiar with because it’s essentially the exact same dock that the Motorola ATRIX 4G uses. Not having that dock to place side-by-side with this one I can’t exactly tell you how it’s different, but I wager the pop-off top is the only bit that’s changed to make way for the slightly larger chassis of the PHOTON. That said, have a look at how our friendly Motorola narrator lets us know of the abilities you’ll have with this newest version of Motorola’s futuristic vision for device singularity.

  1. the car dock comes with a charging cable.  http://shop2.sprint.com/NASApp/onlinestore/en/Action/OSBrowseAccessoriesDetail?PHONE_ID=MOTOMB855&categoryRefName=Car+Kits&selectedAccessoryID=KPM5664Q

  2. As a Sprint Premier customer who was one of the 5 chosen to do an early trial of the Photon 4G, we received the Car Navigation Dock as well. I can state, unequivocally, that it DOES charge the phone, and also has an audio output that can be plugged into your car’s stereo through a 3.5mm plug to amplify navigation sounds.

  3. The webdock (pardon me, media dock) is not the same as the Atrix. The Atrix’s USB and HDMI connectors are down near the bottom of the phone and reversed, so you cannot plug a Photon in to an Atrix dock. This is disappointing, since I wanted to try my Photon on an Atrix lapdock at the store… no go.

  4. I get no option to choose webtop when phone is plugged in i tried 3 hdmi
tvs a hdmi laptop i own 2 docks both same results and when the phone is
on the dock you can only hear audio and see a Motorola symbol bouncing
around the tv. need help….??? not sure if its due to the latest update
