Motorola’s DROID XOOM Android Honeycomb tablet will not have integrated 4G, sources have suggested, but instead use an optional, removable LTE modem for those living in areas with Verizon 4G coverage. Tipsters yesterday confirmed the DROID XOOM name and the absence of standard 4G, but Android and Me‘s source suggests there’s a PCI express card slot on the Motorola slate for the necessary modem.
The DROID XOOM is expected to drop at CES 2011 next week, with a teaser campaign counting down the days to the show. It runs Android 2.3 Honeycomb on an NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor.
Its going to run 2.4 Honeycomb, not 2.3 gingerbread.
It’s a very nice tablet from the news that’s been released. But will we be able to purchase and use the WIFI only. I have a smart phone and refuse to purchase another data plan for a tablet. Verizon gets enough money out of me for my FIOS and my Droid X. I would buy the motorola tablet if I can just buy the tablet. If not, will wait for Archos or I hate saying this.. IPAD 2
So is Honeycomb 3.0 or 2.4? Other sites are describing the tab to be offered with a “Optional LTE Modem” which would be nice so that you can use it on Verizon or AT&T when they finish their initial roll out next year. From what I gathered AT&T and Verizon will support LTE and Clear Connect indicated it would be easy to update their gear to move from WiMax to LTE if that is what the global standard for 4G becomes.
Myself, I want to know where to Pre-Order the Xoom. It looks pretty slick from everything I have seen. What would be really awesome is if it had a Bluetooth 2.0+ADR built in as well as the 802.11 a/b/g/n radio.
