Looks like we have just got the final word that the Motorola Droid X will be getting Android 2.3 Gingerbread starting this Friday. We have mentioned this a few times over the last few weeks, even yesterday we mentioned a slew of Verizon Droid devices getting 2.3 soon. Apparently the 2.3 update was approved back at the first of May, but better late than never right.

So the official word is Friday May 27th the Droid X will start getting the OTA update being pushed by Verizon. We are not sure if it will be Android 2.3 or 2.3.4 but we have reached out the our Verizon PR contact and will update when we know more. We also asked about the Android 2.3 update for the Droid X2 that was just released. You can see our review on that phone here. Hopefully the X2 will get the update soon like its older brother.

We mentioned many Motorola Droid devices would be getting the update in this story here, there was no talk of the Droid X2 in that either but we have a feeling the wait shouldn’t be to long. So get ready for Friday and start hitting that update button all you Droid X users. Here’s what we heard from our Verizon contact so far.

Hey there,

Verizon Wireless will begin pushing Android 2.3, Gingerbread, to the DROID X by Motorola on Friday. Enhancements include a download manager app, a refreshed user interface, app grouping and more. Customers can visit www.verizonwireless.com/droidxsupport for more information about the update.

Thanks and let me know if you have any additional questions.

  1. In the xda forums someones x2 was android 2.3.3 with system version: 1.3.231.MB870.VERIZON.EN.US, and apparently gingerbreak doesnt work on it

  2. There are some people who are not happy with the Gingerbread port for DriodX.
