Quick reminder for those that may be running with a Droid 2 Global, no Verizon and Motorola didn’t forget about your update, they just were making sure to get it right and now it is finally available. Although FroYo was cold and tasty Motorola now has some fresh baked Android 2.3 Gingerbread ready for the D2 Global and it should be rolling out right now.

Back in August the Droid 2 Global 2.3 Gingerbread build was leaked and available for all but this latest release is the official version and should be hitting handsets all week. The standard Droid 2 just started its update a few days ago so it’s good to see users didn’t have to wait long for the official version.

As always with most updates this is rolling out in phases and you should see it within the next few days. I know there are always a few that don’t want to wait and as usual you can manually pull the update by going to Menu > Settings > About Phone > System Update to get the Gingerbread goodness started. From there the entire update process should take about 10-15 minutes.

I’d back up anything of importance just to be safe, but you should be good to go. Enjoy the Gingerbread and feel free to drop us any comments below if you have any issues or comments after the update.

  1. So far not thrilled. I downloaded update this morning amd twice now my phone has powered itself down and back on. Grrr….my husband went thru this with his droid x when he got update. I don’t understand. I love the looks of the gingerbread update but not at all liking the power down. Why does it do that? This 2nd time it powered down while I was turning down the volume on my text message alerts. Does anyone know?

    • Very interesting, if this happens again feel free to come back and comment again. Occasionally problems arise with updates but powering down sounds a bit more severe. Please comment if it happens more.

My brothers droid X went down the tubes with the latest update, needed a full wipe and restore to finally work as it should, hubby could try that.

      • Thanks for replying. It has happened again just now. Again while turning volume up this time while I was in an app called Daily Bible. I can listen to podcasts on the app and when turning volume up it froze and power cycled. Argh! What on earth? Hubby says he hasn’t it happen anymore to his Droid X. It would happen to him even when he would turn it off to go to work…it would power his phone on. I’m not sure what is causing this for me now but pray I can figure it out soon as I like the UI now. I noticed even my purchased keyboard has delays. Its called the perfect keyboard and typing now is sooooo delayed with this update. If anyone has suggestions…PLEASE advise! Thank u in advance! Blessings!

  2. Mine will power off randomly before the update, but since my phone did the autoupdate, weird things happen with my texting. Randomly, when I type a word that has a letter in it like, m, p, or e, it will take me to a miscellaneous application. I have to restart my phone to remedy that. On top of that, sometimes now when I text something happens and it types a random saved word in the middle of my sentences, or repeats the same letter twice in a row. It’s really strange and frustrating.

    • Same thing happened to me. G would take me to g-mail, b to browser, and L to calander. To fix it you go to settings then to applications then press quick launch and hold down on the shortcut and the option will come up to clear the shortcut

      • Maybe its the stock keyboard? Try another from the market to see if it does the same cuz I don’t have that issue with the Perfect Keyboard. Only issue I have is a small delay with the new update when typing. Let me know.

  4. Everything works great except for the fact that VCAST Apps and Accuweather, which were supposed to be pre-installed apps that I actually planned on using, are nowhere to be found.

  5. After I updated to gingerbread, It was never able to detect the memory card. Had to sbf to 2.2 and then load the leaked version. Though the leaked version is also same-607, it does not have the issue. Also, there is some issue with the backlight, sometimes it does not glow in dark.

  6. I have the Droid2 Global.  I just went to  Menu > Settings > About Phone > System Update.  It says your “Device is up to date!  No update is necessary at this time”
What gives.  My setting say android version 2.2

  7. Careful people. I downloaded that update and it may have bricked my uprooted phone. I just got a replacement phone this afternoon. In all honesty, my original Droid was a bit buggy but Verizen agrees that the update “may not have taken well to your phone” whatever that means.

  8. killed the sd card reader (card is fine) wont hook up to the computer, killed the lights on my keypad and on the home bar. they did a factory restore which they said didnt solve the problem… the restore still had the gingerbread ui so it deffinatly overwrote factory settings. they gave me a new one.

    • for the record, i have the white droid2 global. 2 months old. got the update on the 4th, went to the store on the 7th and had a replacement phone by the 9th. update is no longer available on the new phone.

      • I got a new phone as well, because the update is messing with my SD card reader..Unfortunately it did come installed with gingerbread and I hate it!

  9. I also have been getting random reboots on my Droid 2.  Usually when I swipe to unlock.   Went to the store and got a replacement phone.   Am setting it up today and already it rebooted as I unlocked it.   I also get random notifications when there’s nothing to notify!

  10. im having the same problem with the unlocking and rebooting. im also having problems with the backup assistance and the app market. i cant connnect to the app market and every time i go to back up my phone and i put in my pin it says the pin is wrong so i press forgot pin and it gives me the pin ive been entering in and it still says the pin is wrong.

    • I am having  this same issue.  This will be my 3rd D2 Global, most recently replaced a week ago, and I cannot get it to update to the newest OS Gingerbread?  Does anyone know why?  Did Verizon put a hold on the updates since so many people were having issues afterwards?

  11. The droid2 global sucks ass!!! I wanted to update my phone and found this website and read the comments..now I’m not real positive if I should update it..??? What do y’all think??

  12. I had the new OS on my D2G and It got smashed. Got my new D2G and it will not update. The 2.2 OS is HORRIBLE. It is the main reason people think the phone sucks. It spazzes out and locks up alot on the 2.2 Hold out for the new OS Gingerbread. It makes the phone awesome again!

  13. ive about lost all faith in Motorola and Verizon for as much as we’ve paid for these phones there shouldent be near as many glitches and bs problems that we have to deal with mine shuts down by its self all the time the touch screen glitches all the time and many other weird things that would take too long to explain hell I’ve seen the phone show 2 different times on the same screen and it wasn’t an app glitch either I think when a company releases such a glitch’y device they should have a mandatory recall id like to see a class action suit against these gready aholes for product misrepersntation fast and smooth my ass I think my old razor would work better than this junky thing anyhow I can’t get the update either go figure they would release a glitch’y update do they not run a beta or test it b4 they release it lol sorry for venting on you guys just pretty pissed at the moment as having to type this twice because my phone decided to shut itself off go figure it would after I typed a novel lmao lesson learned tho ill definitely read some tech and supper fourms if I decide to get the x2 or d3

  14. Did they decide to just drop the update for the Droid 2 Global? Weren’t they supposed to get this done weeks ago? Motorola’s quality has gone way down hill. This is my second replacement so I am being careful not to load too many apps or move any of them to the SD card because my last one would lose them, which others have had happen, too. So far so good except for having to consantly charge the thing. The old brick, the original Tac flip phone or the Krzr were the best for their day…what happened? Seriously, this thing isn’t even that good as a phone and the speakerphone is useless. Verizon actually tried to sell me a Droid 3 when I called for tech support on this phone…for $219!…and extend my contract….Hahaha, wouldn’t I just get an iphone or something 4g for that kind of money? Come on Motorola and Verizon and please push the update!

  15. want gingerbread for d2g? find the version for it online, follow the instructions to manually install. takes 2 secs, and you dont even need a computer if you choose not to

  16. Update caused loss of sd access, did a factory reset still no sd card access. Everything that has to do wit sd integration reads:”please insert sd card”. How do I get phone to read sd card again? When I first updated it the sd card mounted fine, then it froze, I removed the battery and restarted it but it never prepares the sd card….. help

  17. Updated my Droid 2 Global to Android 2.3 and at first I liked it, but that has changed. The text “autofill” function is crap as it puts in words by itself way to simply.(hit space bar twice and it places the next assumes word instead of a period) My phone now randomly restarts and drops calls. Sometimes it wont make or receive calls just goes back to pain screen when I hit send, and then I have to restart the phone to fix it. Sometimes mid-call it just hangs up. The browser force-closes as soon as it opens. I have to use Dolphin or Opera and Dolphin still FCs sometimes. But worst of all…I cannot type any significant length of words and the type system locks up. For instance imagine I am texting my friend Nick; I open the text app and start typing I get “Hello” (now it froze and I need to hit the home button and reopen the text app) then I type “Ni” (froze again hit the home button and restart) “ck. Whats u” (froze again, close and restart) “p?” (froze again close and restart) hit send. It does it in the browser too. But then it freezes the browser and I have to restart the whole phone!
Is there a way to undo the update? I use text and email for work and this is killing me because I cannot type anything.

    • Same thing happened with me. The solution is: Settings>Location/Security>Language and Keyboard> Multi-Touch Keyboard> Next Work Prediction and then uncheck it. You will be able to resume texting without any issues.
