Hey folks, those of you with the Motorola Droid 2 can now go ahead and get updated to the latest and greatest, Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Available right now the update should be hitting handsets any time now. While it has leaked in the past this is the real deal right from Motorola.

If you aren’t already running CyanogenMod 7 for the Droid 2 now would be a good time to go ahead and check for updates. If you don’t feel like waiting for the OTA you can pull the update manually as usual by going to Settings>About Phone>System Updates — Then hit OK for the Gingerbread cookies to start baking.

As always Verizon has provided some documentation and you can check that out above, or full-size below. Along with the 2.3 Gingerbread update users should receive the new Moto Blur custom UI changes, some of which are actually a nice touch and better than what we’ve seen in the past from Motorola, or should I say Googarola now that Google bought Motorola Mobility.

So go ahead and update that Droid 2 to Android 2.3 Gingerbread and let us know in the comment section below how everything goes.

  1. I got it OTA this morning (I think, or at least sometime during the night because it prompted me to upgrade this morning about 6:30 AM EDT).  I’m in Louisville, KY and have been looking forward to this for a while now.  4.5.601.en.US

  2. I never received my update OTA. I did however receive my phone from the worst insurance company in the world Asurion. God only knows what the previous owner did to it.
Ive gone thru many replacements with Asurion because they have always been glitchy, GPS barely worked, dropped calls and network when online. They say the phones are always refurbished just like a brand new phone. Thats rubbish because I always find traces of the previous owner.

This gingerbread update better fix all my issues or else I’m making the switch to Apple.
I started off with a Nokia with Cingular back in about 95/96. Couldnt complain because there wasn’t many other options. Went to Verizon and jumped on a Motorola phone. Absolutely awful. Switched to the LG ENV. Used the 1 and 2 with some problems but could deal with them. Smartphones came out and sales rep praised great things about the Droid 2.  Nothing but problems Had it replaced 4 or 5 times. Evenutally they sent me Droid 2 Global. Experienced little problems. Thats broke in a snow storm. They sent me a brand new R2D2 worked flawlessly then it was stolen. Back to the Droid 2 again.

Verizons gingerbread update better be the cure for all problems. I’m sure I’m not the only one that feels like this. Since Google bought Motorola hopefully we will see some positive changes

    • Ummmm, seems like you stated that you always get refurbished phones, that do not work correctly, and the only brand new phone did work properly until it was “stolen”. Im not sure how a phone gets stolen, since mine is always on me when I leave the house. But whatever.

Maybe buy a brand new phone and stop getting refurbished phones. I have had my Droid 2 for almost a year now, since they first came out, with no issues. This phone is awesome, and if you claim you went through 5 already then there is something wrong with you. I doubt the new gingerbread update will fix your busted used phones you keep getting. Pathetic whiner.

    • I went through six phones in one month with Assurion they are a nightmare.  Do not update to the gingerbread, Before this phone was replaced for the umpteenth time the  update had so many issues the phone is not usable.  It keeps shutting down, can’t find contacts, the reception is worse and it keeps going to 1x.  It won’t sync with the docking equiptment, it freezes every minute, in short what were they thinking!

  3. Has anyone had any issues with their contact lists?  I updated a couple of days ago and most of my contacts are missing.   If I happened to text them recently I can see their info in texting, but not in my contacts.

  5. Slow. Things I loved about my old version are now gone (like the smiley key in texting and the favorites list for calling). So far the only positive thing I see is that I can finally get rid of all my facebook contacts in my phonebook.

  6. We just did 3 (yes, 3) R2D2 phones without any problems. Ours actually seem to run faster. The new GUI takes a little getting used to. Bluetooth sounds better but that might just be coincidental. We will see. So far, I like it.

  8. Horrible. Downloaded two weeks ago and it ruined my phone.  Phone would shut down on it’s own, I couldn’t get to my contacts or dialer to make calls, couldn’t get to settings or do a hard reset and had to get a replacement phone.  Why would they release an update that pretty much disables the phone? Now the update on my refurb just popped up today and hesitant to download but guess I will be forced to.

    • No you are not forced to.  It will pop up and ask you to install every twelve hours.  I just say no.  It’s annoying to have to do that, but better than upgrading and bricking the phone.

  9. I’ve always had a bit of bad luck with this phone. since the update, my phone now restarts itself about 5-7 times a day (usually during a phone call). and in the past ten minutes my touch AND slide keyboard no longer works. when i try to type, it doesnt show up. and when it does show up, as soon as i touch the space bar it stops again. when i type it often goes to random shortcuts, and freezes up on me much more than it used to. the new update complelty ruined my phone.

i used to restart my phone about 2 times a day, just because it would freeze up on me alot. now im forced restart my phone about every 4 hours. honestly, im thinking about switching to Apple. I love the reception i get with verizon and i love the droid. but im tired of having so many problems with each phone i have!

    • i agree big time man. never seen an iPhone do anything even like this. and when i got my macbook, the service was great and they walked me through the whole set up process. with my droid, they through a phone at me and say heres ur new phone haha

      • I’ve had iPhones do the same things. There is no difference other than apple is proprietary and therefore can make updates easier. However, I updated the 3G to iOS 4 and it was the biggest mistake I could have made. I had to buy a new phone because the thing would freeze all the time, restart itself and drop soooo many calls. The Gingerbread update is probably just not exactly where it needs to be right now with the Droid 2, but don’t be misguided that Apple products always work. It’s much easier for a company that only has certain hardware to make an update that works for that hardware. Yet they still failed with the 3G. So any 3Gs owners, I urge you don’t update your phone.

  10. I’m don’t have verizone anymore but still using droid 2 global could anyone please tell me how to update the phone? can I find the update file anywhere and install myself? I tried to put cyjanogen mod7 but there is no stable version at least I can’t find 🙁 please help…
