After weeks or rumors, speculations, and leaks, Motorola has finally and officially unveiled its latest smartphone offering. We were expecting either a modular smartphone or a new flip phone but as it turns out, the Moto Z Droid is more of a modular device. We didn’t expect the Droid name to be added but the new phone is called as the Moto Z Droid. As with other Droid phones, this one will be exclusive from Verizon, at least, in the United States.

The Moto Z Droid with Moto Mods is a new system that features plug-and-play items. So as not to confuse, the Moto Z Droid is the phone while the Moto Mods are the pieces that can be attached to Moto Z phones–the new Moto Z Droid and the future Z phones. We only saw a few pieces of Moto Mods including the ones below.

It appears the Motorola will be partnering with other companies for the Moto Mods. So far, we know JBL, Kate Spade, and TUMI will be joining the modular phone program. Obviously the JBL SoundBoost Speaker will be used to improve phone audio. It also comes with a built-in battery that can last up to 10 hours, and a kickstand to properly hold the phone when needed.

There’s also the Moto Insta-Share Projector that also works as a kickstand and extra battery but its main function is as a projector to display images up to a maximum of 70-inches. Meanwhile, fashion brands like Kate Spade New York and TUMI will work as extra battery packs for an extended 22-hour power. The two are described to be sleek and less bulky.

We learned the Moto Z Droid will be out in two variants: the standard ‘Moto Z Droid Edition’ and the ‘Moto Z Force Droid Edition’. Both will have almost the same specs but the Force will have a larger battery. Color options will differ between the two.

Specs of the Moto Z Droid include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset, 5.5-inch Quad HD screen, 32GB onboard storage, microSD card slot for memory expansion (2TB max), 5MP front-facing cam, unknown rear camera (autofocus and OIS), USB-C connectivity, and a fingerprint reader.

The Moto Z Droid uses water repellent coating to protect itself from exposure to rain, splashes, or spills. It’s not waterproof, only water-resistant. No information on pricing and availability yet but you can now sign-up on Verizon. Pre-order will begin next month.
