Smartwatch fever is starting to hit the East as Chinese manufacturers scramble to create the next smartwatch sensation. But while Meizu still doesn’t have a prototype to show, its concept images show that it has some very ambitious dreams.

Perhaps most noticeable is that the Meizu smartwatch, currently being ingeniously nicknamed the Mwatch, has a rather fancy curved display. Not even Samsung, who has been boasting of its flexible and curved display capabilities, deigned to give its current Galaxy Gear a bent face. Sure, most of our regular watches have flat surfaces, but there’s much to be said about an eye catching smartwatch of the future.

Meizu has been quite forthcoming with its target hardware features, which include a 2.4-inch display with a 480×640 pixel resolution, a 5 megapixel autofocus camera, and physical buttons on the left side. Your usual connectivity features are also there such as WiFi, Bluetooth, and NFC. Meizu is also aiming to support 5000 applications, most probably from Android’s catalog. They’re not saying, though, what tricks they will be employing to make those apps usable on such a tiny screen.

Of course, these are all just ideas and goals and Meizu has so far nothing to show. It better prepare one quick as rival manufacturers on its side of the globe, like Huawei and ZTE seem quite close to launching their own assault on the nascent smartwatch market.
