Don’t you just hate it when you’re intently listening to your music while walking on your treadmill, when suddenly, something startles you and you pull your earphones and your phone drops onto a hard surface? Or you’re playing a game on your laptop, your phone rings, and you hurriedly unplug your earphones from your laptop, only to have the audio jack stuck or damaged? A new Kickstarter project wants to bring a solution to problems like that, using the powers of magnets.

If you’ve always thought that the Mac’s MagSafe power connectors were a good idea to protect your device, then the creators of the Magzet project have the same idea as well. They want to redesign the audio jack (which has been around for 50 years or so) and bring magnets into the equation. It actually consists of two small pieces that aims to protect your device, protect your ears (even if audio jack related injuries to your ears aren’t really a thing but it could be), and basically make life a little easier.

The smaller piece is called a MagJack and is the one that you plug into a headphone jack on your smartphone, computer, tablet, laptop or wherever there is a headphone jack. The slightly bigger piece is called the MagKap and it fits into your headphone plug. When the two finally magnetically meet, then you can listen to your heart’s content without worrying about the scenarios we stated earlier. The creators say that audio quality is not compromised and in fact, in terms of using it for calls, it lessens static and interference, unlike when you use a normal audio jack.

They are still a lot short of their targeted amount, but the campaign still has 38 days to go. If you feel like supporting their project, you can pledge as low as $20 to get the Magzet package (with both the MagJack and MagKap already).
