We've seen ads in apps and games, our notification bar, and a few other areas but can you imagine them being on your lockscreen? Every time you wake up your phone and slide to unlock be greeted with an advertisement. I know, it sounds outright awful. But what if every time you swiped to unlock your phone you made some cash? Getting paid to use your device. That's exactly what Locket is offering.
Anything with ads in my face makes me want to rage quit and throw my phone. It reminds me of the Amazon Kindle Fire ads on the start screen, only these benefit us, not Amazon. You'll actually get paid by locket for using their app and blasting your smartphone full of petty adverts. If I see the trailer for Enders Game on my screen, that isn't so bad. Right?
Locket actually replaces your stock lockscreen, which means you won't be able to use a pin if that's your preferred method. Locket takes over and has it's own slide-to-unlock. Slide to the left to see ads, watch movie trailers, or follow paying groups on Twitter. Slide to the right and you'll unlock your phone as usual and continue with your day. All of this while getting paid. Time to get paid!
I've installed it myself, and so far it appears I get a penny for each time I unlock my phone. You can't just keep doing it though, it tops out at 3 cents per hour. Weak! Then there's deals where if you swipe to the left you'll get $10 credit to spend at a website. There's little promotions as well as the usual adverts. It's actually kind of a good idea.
What we’re trying to do is change the perception people have towards ads. On mobile, ads suck right now. Our ads are different because they’re beautiful and they actually reward you for your glances. We hope users will like it.”
These guys will even give you a dollar for every friend you get to install their app, that could be useful. In the end however, I absolutely hate ads. I can't stand the idea, and said EWWW when I read about this application. The app launched today on the Play Store (link below) and is a US-only BETA for now. Who's interested? Would you allow ads to take over your lockscreen? I sure won't!
