The LG Optimus line just got a little bigger with an official announcement of the LG Optimus V, a higher-end-of-entry-level Android phone priced at $149.99 and set to release on Valentines Day through Virgin Mobile. Details available to us now include a 3.2-inch touchscreen display, 3G and Wifi capable, 3.2 megapixel camera, video, and we’re gonna send out a wild guess and say that it’ll have Android 2.2 Froyo. If it’s anything like it’s brother LG Optimus U, it’ll be a nice little phone that zips around fast as you’d expect a phone in this price range to do so. More than likely this phone will end up being free on contract sooner than later.

Take a peek at the full press release below and see here some nice high-resolution photos for your pleasure:

Virgin Mobile Celebrates Valentine’s Day with Launch of
LG Optimus V To Make Your Sweetheart Swoon

WARREN, N.J. – Feb. 1, 2010 – Virgin Mobile USA continues to enrich its handset lineup with the introduction of LG Optimus V, expanding its selection of Android handsets. Rolling out at Radio Shack stores and at  www.virginmobileusa.com/cell-phone-plans/beyond-talk-plans.jsp beginning today for $149.99, LG Optimus V creates a unique user experience that will keep people connected and in-the-know while on-the-go. LG Optimus V will become available in other major retailers throughout the month as well.

“More than 44 percent of smartphones purchased in the third quarter of 2010 were Android based with the i-Phone coming in second[i],” said Bob Stohrer, vice president-Marketing, Virgin Mobile USA. “With LG Optimus V on Android, Virgin Mobile customers who crave constant connectivity get a highly functional device with a high-resolution 3.2” touch screen paired with an affordable monthly plan and no annual contract.”

“Users get the best of both worlds with LG Optimus V,” said Tim O’Brien, vice president of LG marketing. “Bringing an easy-to-use blend of applications and sleek design, LG Optimus V delivers the features users want with the efficient performance capabilities they deserve.”

Virgin Mobile Beyond Talk plans start at just $25 dollars a month for 300 minutes of voice and include unlimited messaging, IM, email, social networking and web access.  For those who talk a bit more, the $40 plan offers 1,200 minutes of voice and for heavy gabbers, the $60 plan offers unlimited voice minutes each month.

Top handset review websites have described the LG Optimus S™, “as the best Android phone available,” “affordable yet full-featured,” “impressively quick and with [all of] the functionality most consumers need.” LG Optimus V, similar to the LG Optimus S, gives Virgin Mobile customers full integration of social networking apps, Microsoft Outlook Exchange e-mail and advanced messaging capabilities. In addition, Optimus V users also have access to more than 100,000 applications currently available on the Android Market™.

LG Optimus V also comes with a 3.2-inch touch-screen display, 3G and Wi-Fi capable, a 3.2 MP camera and video, and preloaded applications, including popular social apps such as YouTube® and Google Talk™. Additional features include:
• Swype, a faster and easier way to input text on any screen, with one continuous finger or stylus motion across the screen keyboard.  The patented technology enables users to input words faster and easier than other data input methods—at over 40 words per minute
• Contact and calendar sync via ActiveSync
• Android Web browser
• Full integration of Google Apps™ such as Google Maps™,Gmail™ and Google Navigation™
• Document file viewer
• Built-in music player

Optimus V is the second Virgin Mobile phone to offer Virgin Mobile Live, an online music stream of performances by past & present Virgin Mobile Festival artists including studio tracks, exclusive Festival performances and more, for free!

The launch of LG Optimus V also marks Virgin Mobile’s new handset packaging that is more eco-friendly.  The green packaging is now composed of 100% recycled plastic and uses almost 50% less plastic. The design of the outer box has been revised to more clearly highlight the device, its features and Virgin Mobile’s Beyond Talk Plans.  “The new packaging will provide a better customer experience in opening the package as well being kind to the environment,” said Stohrer.

  1. This is a terrible terrible deal for 149.99. Especially considering the contract price for the Motorola Atrix 4G is 149.99. Comparing the two phones, the Atrix 4G breaks the Optimus V in half and eats its insides for breakfast.

    • um, yeah but you forget to mention that Motorola Atrix 4G is with a 2 year contract and on top of that you have to pay like $30 for the “4g” part, so you can go ahead and over pay, but I rather pay $40 for a good Android 2.2!

      • I agree Cha7520, I rather pay $80 for two lines full 3G and 1200 minutes each line that the $190 I was paying on Verizon.

    • Atrix 4G is a very nice phone, but the price of the phone is only a fraction of what you ultimately pay. The 2 year contract requires a voice plan of $39 and data at $30. Assuming you only need 100 text messages @ $5/mo, that’s already $74. Then add in tax, local fees, teleco fees, etc. You’ll be in the ballpark of $85 for your 350 minutes and 2 gig data, or over $2000 for your 2 year contract.

The Optimus V is $149, and the base plan is 300 minutes with unlimited text/data for $25. That’s exactly $25. No extra tax or fees added on. Which means $600 over 2 years, a savings of 70%.

It only gets worse for the ATRIX if you use it as it’s intended, with the $500 dock station and tethering fees.

Get ready to bend over for AT&T.

  2. This is a excellent phone, I have had it for 2 weeks and zero issues, android 2.2, wifi, 3g, android market works perfect, had google navigation, etc etc. $149.99 and I pay $25 a month for unlimited text and net use with 300 talk mins, I don’t call much on a cell so I only use 40 to 50 mins a month normally. Battery life can be desired but with all it does, it is the best deal out there. I play angry birds, search the net, can watch youtube videos in HD(something my LG rumor touch couldn’t do). I also have a first gen ipod touch and to be honest, I like the phone as much as the touch, the screen is responsive, the games play very good(some lag at times on angry birds), but the first gen touch I have also lags on that game. It the phone had a slide out keyboard and support for flash video it would be my ideal phone. No contract and $25 a month is great, plus even if you decide not to use the phone and get a new one, you can still use it as a nice mp3/video/game system, plus even without activatinf wifi works, so you can use it without phone service!

  3. I love this phone! I thought I would never be able to get a phone like this through prepaid. If Virgin Mobile keeps offering these types of phones and their phone plans they will be bigger than the contract companies if they are not already. These days we need to spend as little as possible and contract plans are just too expensive and I do not like being locked into a contract.
