Users who have picked up the LG G2X at T-Mobile USA are reporting random freezes or reboots from the handset. Removing the battery or performing a soft reset is not solving the issue. And a full on hard reset does little to solve it either. As you may recall from our post last week, this isn’t the first time the G2X has been acting quirky. In that story, we reported screen bleeding affecting screen colors, especially on a black screen. Now this issue and it can only point to one thing …

Go Fever. Back in the 60s during the Apollo program, the ongoing worry was being so eager to get there that problems and defects were overlooked. And with the wild west competition for getting out the latest and greatest handset and riding the wave of hype and interest, it can often be easy to release a product first, and fix the bugs later in a firmware update. But quality control issues can also kill the wave, causing future users to look elsewhere.

Fortunately, G2X users have been able to exchange the defective handsets for another. But if it’s a design issue, it’s not really clear what good that does. And if it’s a software issue, then they’ll have to wait for that update. Then again, it isn’t happening to every G2X user just yet, so only time will tell what the answer is. Stay tuned.

  1. The reboots are weird and totally random. Unlike other phones that would self reboot once and a while mine literally rebooted itself 3 times in a row (back to back) then it was fine for 3 days after which the phantom reboot process started again.

I don’t know what triggers it as each time the phone was either idle, playing a game or downloading updates from the Android Market.

Please read this LG and offer us some insight. Thanks.

  2. Bought mine a four days ago and not even getting a full day of average to moderate use from the battery and had one random reboot and two lockups that required battery AND SIM card removal (the second time). One freeze after plugging in to charge.

  4. while mine is on the charger it will just shut off and then i have to pull out the battery and put it back in, it makes it really difficult to charge my phone

    • Had same issue. Suggest you exchange while you have your 30 days return policy with T-Mobile. I did and new unit working great.

  7. Received mine on the 19th and had to pull the battery 2x so far because mine won’t turn on and I wasn’t doing anything. By the way the camera is awesome, best on a cell so far, coming from sexy nexy. other then that all has been well .

  8. Hmm. Not a single problem to report with mine so far. No reboots, freezes or anything of the kind. Battery has been great for me so far. (except after a couple hours playing NFS…. that ate battery quick)

  9. Battery life seems almost the same as my Nexus One, and my MyTouch4G. or close.. so that isn’t an issue on my G2x.

I’ve not had a single reboot or freeze yet, but my first phone did have screen bleed. Second is fine

  10. got mine on the 20th and the day after it started with the reboots… called Tech support and suggested factory reset… again the first day was fine and then since last night it went on again… mostly when it was plugged… so they’re sending me a new one and will ship this back to them… Love the phone and I hope this gets fixed soon… Thank G-d I have a reliable Nexus S!!!

  11. I know its not on topic but what wallpaper is on the phone in the screenshot? I’ve searched all over for it and cant find it.

  12. Factory reset and dont “skip” the setup. Don’t overcharge. When you are prompted to unplug because the battery is full, do so…. Advanced task killing will make the processor run too low and reboot the phone. I actually dont think its even necessary to use ATK on this phone but as an android user with 4 previous phones, its a habit. This is by far the best android phone to date and my last phone was an evo.

  13. Received mine last Friday and began having random reboot issues on Saturday. Tried to think of what had changed on the phone that may have caused the reboots and recalled that i had installed the Weather Channel app and Sportacular. Removed both and haven’t had a reboot since Saturday evening. I’m going to attempt to reinstall each of the apps over the next few days to see if i can further reproduce the issue.

  14. All of my G2X problems were solved with a factory reset – “Settings – Privacy – Factory Data Reset”. Since then my battery life has been great.

    • i cant even get my g2x to turn on. the battery is fully charged but taking the battery out doesnt solve my problem. can i cancel my contract because of this?

    • i’m looking for into on factory data reset. (I know enough about “computers/phones” to be dangerous! haha). but what happens? do you lose all your apps, etc. when you reset? and then just download them again?

  15. got mine friday, since then 2 reboots and this evening it went totally dark and would not respond to the power button. called it with another phone and it rang (on the line) but the phone itself did not respond. after the call went to voicemail, the screen backlight came on but no graphics. took the battery out and rebooted. looks like i will have to exchange it which sucks because iv’e spent so much time dialing it in

  17. When I picked up my fist G2X it would shut down and wouldn’t start up again unless I took out the battery. I exchanged it with a different unit and haven’t had any problems. Keeping fingers crossed cause I really like this phone so far.

    • i am on my 2nd phone in just 0ver a month..1st phone battery wouldn’t stay charged and it was getting hot, replace whole unit including battery.  three weeks later and after shutting everything off that drains battery i have had to take battery out and  reset everytime i make a call.  tmobile rep i spoke to today is saying it is the battery..she insisted the battery is the original battery and they will replace it immediatelyy…7 to 10 days by mail…not good enough and that  is not even the problem. it is very hot out and it only seemed to have the problem outside  and with case on…it just seems like it can not take any heat at all. the 1st phone was doing same thing while i was at work and airconditioner was broke….hhhuuummm. i rely on my phone as primary phone and i can’t trust it…any suggestions….will lg give  money back if it is obviously not reliable or was i just a big sucker for buying the newest tech……..i have never bought  newest b4  n now i wasted the money;;;;boo hoo for me  i guess

  18. I’m having the same problems with my phone. It would unexpectedly reboots and the screen would go black and the home and return button would not respond.I would have to press the power button to go to the lock screen. Man I really hope it’s the software.

  19. Ive returned 3 and had he manager at the T-Mobile store open 6 more. All units had backlight bleeding. Some were so bad that you could see brown stains on the screen or a yellowish tint to the whole thing when on white screens. In addition to this blaring quality control issue I’ve also had the following problems:
    Rebooted
    automatic screen brightness doesn’t function
One would not find the GPS location unless on wifi
The market crashed more often than I’m used to when installing apps.

I went ahead and got a full refund, ill go back in a few weeks when I see some sort of response from LG.

  20. Im on my second one–(LCD bleeding–random reboots-OVER HEATING almost everything that can go wrong on both phones…gonna try and get my hands on a third one—but not from a retail store–I want it from Lg themselves So I might have to wait for the buyers remorse period to end..to kick in the warranty..IF THE THIRD ONE IS DEFECTIVE—I WILL WANT MY MONEY BACK I DONT GIVE A DAMN.–THIS IS SAD.

  21. Funny how people made such a big deal about the iPhone 4’s signal problems, but when it’s problems with one of Android’s best device, it’s kept on the DL. I’d rather have crappy receptions than having my phone die on me all the time. At least I can get a case to actually fix the issue. BTW, the G2x is not the only Tegra 2 device with this issue, the Atrix 4G is has been having the same problem. I’m thinking it’s the CPU.

    • and its not only the tegra 2 devices cause i had to send in my NExus s for repair becuase of the SAME EXACT ISSUES. i mean completely identical

  22. Brand new G2x randomly going black and unresponsive (powering down) after screen timeout or short pressing the power button to force a screen timeout in an effort to save battery life. There really needs to be a screen timeout button that isn’t the on/off button. Random blackouts are not ok.

  23. i got the phone on release day and have only had it restart 2x by itself. only other problem iv had is that it will heat up alot when there is nothing running in the background.

  24. hi from france, i have this problem too (yellow lines at bottom on white screen and random shutdown or reboot)
i’ve returned and wait for a replacement 🙁

  25. I’ve had the same issues with sudden re-boots, freezes, excessive battery drain, and overheating. I was using the old SD card from my My Touch 4G without reformatting it. After reformatting the issues settled down but still occurred. I then performed a factory reset and the problems seem to have gone.

  26. My freeze occurred when the phone was apparently attempting to self check with a battery in low power mode. I think this self check in combo with too little power on the battery caused the phone to freeze. Tmobile was good about sending out a replacement handset.

  27. Just bought my G2X a week ago, and a couple of days later experienced the random reboot. I brushed it off as it booted up again and seemed to work fine. Experienced flawless performance with it until this morning. Last night the battery drained all the way down, so I plugged it in to charge overnight. I wake up this morning and now I can’t even turn the phone on! I tried charging via USB, no difference. Pretty frustrating.

  28.  my girlfriend and i got one of the first G2x at the store and none of this has happened to us since then

  29. DO NOT BUY THE G2X….
I just got off the phone with LG and they they told me that they know the phones screen bleeds and that they are working on fixing the issue. LG will not cover this problem under the warranty because “it doesn’t affect the function of the phone” If you have bought the phone within the last 14 days I suggest that you return it because they will be remanfacturing the phone shortly. To see what I am talking about turn up your screens brightness and install iDraw! It will give you a black screen to see the problem. LG manufactured the screens for the iPhone and it was defective as well, BUT Apple decided not to release the phone until is was fixed. It’s too bad that LG won’t stand behind their products and deal with all the consumer complaints.

  30. i bought my g2x yesterday and there was an LG rep. there and he was saying the new gingerbread firmware will be releasing next week….will that solve the problem?

    • Interesting, your post was 2 weeks ago and still no gingerbread and my phone still reboots! So pissed at LG

  31. You guys are a bunch of whiners, it will be fixed with gingerbread, its a small issue and the phone takes about 30 secs to restart. I havent noticed the “backlight bleed” because I have a case and dont turn my brightness all the way up which solves the battery issue too, every new phone has issues, the nexus one and evo started with issues but are now considered 2 of the best phones. Even the iphone had that reception issue and if u ask me that is by far the worst issue because phones are meant for phone calls primarily there should be no issues on the phone side.

  32. I used to have these problems with the stock T-Mobile ROM, but (thanks to the folks at xda-developers) after rooting, removing the T-Mobile crapware and getting a new SIM Card.l my phone is stable.. @helakejr twitter

  33. Bought my phone about 10 days ago and other than the “4G” data issues, it has been performing wonderfully.  I did recently root the phone and use TitaniumBackup to “freeze” the T-mobile Bloatware to free up some memory.  Then today before work I go to check something on my phone and it was turned off!  I tried holding the power button for 5 seconds (the usual way I boot) and got a dim, white screen and then nothing.  Then I re-seated the battery and booted it up.  Fine now….for now.

  34. if all of these issues are occurring, what has t-mobile done when you go into the store?? Thinking of complaining about random reboots and trading the g2x for a sensation in a couple days…

    • T Mobile has done nothing but try to sell another phone to me!  I will never buy another LG product again, nor will I saty with T Mobile after my contract expires!

  35. O.K.    I JUST ENCOUNTERED THE REBOOT ISSUE ABOUT 6 HOURS AGO, MY STORY IS THE SAME AS EVERYONE ELSE, DOWN TO THE FACT THAT I BOUGHT MINE IN PHX MARKET AS WELL. MINE WAS ROOTED CM7 AND LIKE ALWAYS I PUSHED THE PHONE OBVIOUSLY PAST THE ” GREAT DUAL CORE” ( MY G1 TOOK MUCH MORE EXTREME LIMITS OF OVERCLOCKING WAY PAST SPEC AS WELL AS ANYTHING I DID TO IT SOFTWARE WISE. MY ISSUE IS THAT I AM BY NO MEANS PATIENT WHEN THIS HAPPENS SO I BOOTED IN TO RECOVERY AND WIPED/FORMATED AND MOUNTED AND UNMOUNTED THE WHOLE SYSTEM. PRETTY MUCH FIGURED THAT I WOULD KILL IT SOMEHOW IN REVENGE, NOW IT WILL ONLY BOOT INTO RECOVERY OR START TO BOOT (THE FIRST LG LOGO) AND IT WILL JUST SIT. I RUN 2 AC PLUGS TO A SPLIT USB THAT I PLUG INTO THE PHONE, SO, WHEN IT HAPPENED IT WAS 172 DEGREES (F) AND I WAS DOWNLOADING 43 MARKET APPS. IT STARTED TO STALL AND WITHIN 5 MIN ALL DONE. SO MY THOUGHT IS THAT THIS ISSUE IS A LITTLE BIT OF ALL ASPECTS, SW/HW/FW. ALSO WITH ANDROID THEY ALWAYS PUSH THE NEW TECHNOLOGY OUT SO FAST THAT THE TESTING IS NEVER THAT LONG, ITS ALWAYS THE SAME SPEECH, HOLDING PHONE BACK OFF MARKET FOR TESTING WHICH IS ALWAYS 3 MONTHS, IN TURN, ITS REALLY 3 DAYS. ——–MAIN POINT: IT WILL NEVER CHANGE, GET USE TO IT IF YOU WANT THE NEXT LATEST AND GREATEST. QUIT CRYING AND GO BACK TO THAT PHONE YOU HAD, THIS IS WHAT MAKES OPEN SOURCE DEV SO GREAT.  ( OH I JUST NOTICED THAT THE MODEL # LG-P999, THAT IS 666 FLIPPED, HAHA, THE PHONE IS THE DEVIL!!! ENJOY

  36. re g2x freeze/reboot….only way I could figure out (with consultation) how to avoid freeze/rebook is to regularly use “kill apps” app.  Since using this method, freezing seems to have stopped (for several days now).  Is this a way to do it or am I avoiding the fact that freeze/reboot is a more systematic problem? mar74

  37. My LG G2X used to just shut down randomly. Now, it’s stuck in a reboot cycle. T-Mobile wants $20 to “process” my warranty request and gave me a 5 to 7 Business day time frame on a warranty replacement!! I keep my brightness low and so haven’t had the screen issue. T-Mobile has stopped selling this phone claiming inventory issues, but they are just waiting on the re manufactured device from LG. Crappy phone, crappy network. My fully charged phone discharged completely overnight just on cell standby-good ‘ole chatty HSPA network. Also, had to charge phone couple times a day even with BT, Wi-Fi and GPS turned off!! Might as well have a feature phone without all those services turned off!

  38. I’ve only had this phone for ONE WEEK, and it is the worst phone ever!! It freezes and then reboots on its own. That isn’t the biggest problem the phone has terrible connection/data issues even when i have all four bars and on a 4g connection it will all of a sudden stop working to where i cant even call out Ive talked to 4 T-mobile reps. NO HELP! I could’ve kept my Mytouch 4g for this crap!

  39. Please sign this petition if you had problems with this phone, plan on doing whatever necessary, to get LG to do a recall or release the promise update, or full refund, and have to do the legal methods, due to LG  lack of acknowledgement, that their even any issues with the phone, and lack of reimbursement of the purchase price of the phone, even thur it’s been replace over three times!!
    http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/lgg2x/ instead og lg***x put lgg2x

    • I was not able to access the petition.  Can you please resubmit the link?  Thanks so much!  I have never experienced such crappy customer service as I have with T Mobile and LG.  I am on my 2nd G2X because of the phone turning off by itself.  My business revenue has dropped 40%.  T Mobile’s suggestion is to BUY another phone!  Why would I want to invest anymore money on LG or T Mobile.  I am even more frustrated that I have 1 1/2 years left on my T Mobile contract!!

    • I got my LG G2X from Tmobile on 9.11.2011 and have been having issues with freezes and rebooting. LG said it was a software problem so they sent me another phone but same model and still same problem. The annoying part is that T Mobile and LG are are passing the buck to each other. I just raised hell at the T Mobile store in

  40. my g2x just wont open. only the LG logo is showing up and then it dies and reopens until the battery goes dead. i hope to replace my phone with a new one.

  42. my g2x just wont open. only the LG logo is showing up and then it dies and reopens until the battery goes dead. i hope to replace my phone with a new one.

  43. OMG! I thought it was I was the only one. I got mine free through an online TM promotion but NOW I KNOW WHY THEIR GIVING THEM AWAY!!!! And its terrible that the phone is so unpredictable because outside of that, I REALLY like it! I’m coming from Sprint’s Epic 4G and I actually like the G2X better. I love the size, the auto focus camera and it’s lightening speed but I can’t keep the damn thing ON! Arghhhhhhh!!!

  44. So I have experienced the same problems stated below.  I used my warranty and $20 later, I got my replacement phone with 2.3.3 loaded on it!  GREAT!, my problems are solved.  Sadly, no, in fact there is a new problem in addition to still experiencing the freezing and rebooting, now the power button seems to be stuck making it inop!  So the only way i can access the phone is to remove the battery and replace, interestingly though the phone starts right up which is why I think the power button is stuck somehow.  When I try to hold it down, nothing!!!  All this and I haven’t even had the chance to send back the original phone yet!

    • having the same EXACT issue here.   traded in 2.2 for 2.3 G2x and now this one has a problem returning from screen timeout.  phone is still on, but power button won’t always activate screen.  only solution is to pull the battery and reboot…   bummer

  45. my g2x just did this about ten minutes ago all i did was unplug the battery for about ten min. came right back up. when it falls into that mode the only thing you can do is remove its source. re apply and let it re charge because it is going to kill your battery.

  46. My case is a bit different from others and possibly may not be in the right forum but I want to get the word out. About 30 minutes ago my phone decided it will no longer charge unless the back light is on. I had to get into settings and change it so that the light stays on when charging. So far so good but it’s too soon to tell and reading these other comments I worry it this is only the beginning. I have a 2.3.3 model and it hasn’t even been a two full weeks yet!

  47. Crap! Am experiencing the same problems with my LG G2x phone.  It was sold to me highly recommended and I fell for it.  Now Tmobile will be sending me my third replacement.  So frustrated because it has been only 3 months ago since I got the first one and now on my 3rd phone of the same.  They quote unquote that if it doesnt work for me again then they will offer me a different phone. If these are known issues, it should have been pulled out off the market or corrected months back.  I never had such bad experience with a smart phone until now…sad

    • Me too.  Same story.  They also charged me $20 for a “replacement” phone that was defective.  To add insult to injury, one tech on the phone told me that it was one of my downloaded apps that was causing all the problems, and we would need to troubleshoot.  Like I have all day to sit around and troubleshoot their phone.  I told him to shove it, and send me another phone asap or I would terminate.  I am on my third phone.

  48. I’ve had the same one for 6 months now.  Started acting quirky so I did a hard reset, and now EVERYTHING is SOO much better, it is running smoother and faster, have had no resets, and the battery is performing WAY better, It used to burn about 10% per hour on a good day before (ie about 10 hr of batter life with low usage), but yesterday I had it off the charger for 8 hours with moderate use and it was still at 70% battery! Yea!

  49. I called tech support another dothead dumb as a bag of rock’s. U was at Starbucks, the dots bought the Starbucks, she could not ring anything, we have too many dotheads in this country, the dots got caught stealing food from company employe
    es refrigator, they are thieves.
I’ll never uy lg nothing, i bought the Samsung galaxy 2, cant wait.

  50. Blendergod: Please post your nationality. I’d like to find some way to insult you, your family, and your ancestors. You seem to enjoy including this racist, bigoted mindset in your life, as I’m sure it has gotten you far and provided invaluable friendships with quality people. I don’t want you to feel that you are the only one giving this kind of wisdom and opinion. You need to feel included. I imagine you never really were included- by your family or friends, and never received any kind of intelligent and conscious guidance about the diverse range of human beings in this world. I know it’s difficult to realize, but there are more than just your average, ignorant, hateful type of people out there (very much unlike the group of scholars I’m sure you associate with).

  51. I’ve had the same issues… hard reset no help. 9 phones in 6 months, 3 of them would not function out of the box.

  52. I have same rebooting problems, Sometime black screen comes and need to plug out battery and insert again, i need permanent fix of this issue
