Today marks the day, the amazing T-Mobile LG G2x was released along with the G-slate and Sidekick 4G and there is already reports coming in that there might be a few hardware issues that need to be worked out. Or some quality control. We have our very own review unit of the G2x and it was awesome. Nothing but great things to say about it, but we got another one and it had a serious issue. Backlight bleeding.

What you see above is the MyTouch4G on the left, and the G2x on the right. Both with a black screen. See the issue, the light is bleeding severely on the G2x. This is the worst case I’ve seen so I don’t think it is a big issue, but worth noting. A few users over at XDA have also reported the same thing, but none seem to be as bad as this. I understand it is a LCD, and they have these issues, just like my $1000 Samsung TV in my living room, but when no other smartphone I’ve ever used looks this way. I would consider that an issue. I also want to mention this isn’t very noticeable on Android 2.2, but it will be on the black notification bar of Android 2.3 as well as every game, or video with black bars or dark area’s.

There is a pretty big debate going on over at XDA about the fact that people with this should just “deal with it” and I see there point because it is how LCD’s are designed. I just think this is to the point where it is more than just a little bit. I’ve used the Droid, the Nexus One, Vibrant, G2, MyTouch4G, Droid X, and the EVO and more, and none of them had anything NEAR as bad as the photo above. So either it is just a LCD issue and we should all get over it, or do you think this should not happen when it doesn’t on any other phone is your choice to make. Let us know in the comments below.

    • yea I had people at XDA saying deal with it… because it was an LCD display. but my N1, and no Samsung’s have much of it.

Update though: went to t-mobile store and display unit was fine. I got a new one and mine doesn’t have any unless I turn brightness to 100% and look for it. so basically none as I’m usually around 35% brightness.

      • Just a quick side note to your N1, Samsung reference. N1 is an AMOLED display. New Samsungs are SUPER AMOLED displays. They are not LCD’s and do not require a backlight when showing the blacks, which is the only time you see the bleeding. An AMOLED display will never suffer from bleeding.

  1. How does this actually effect any displays? Like if you were playing a movie, and there was a dark screen, does it not look good? I never really thought about this, or really have any experience with light bleed in the sense that you’re talking about.

    • Yeah it is really distracting. I was trying to watch Tron and both my top corners were glaring that washed out white. Not cool.

  3. I work for radio shack and i sold a couple of these phones today. I did notice it but nothing serious, phone seems to be pretty quick with 4g and the features beat any that T Mobile has to offer. Can’t wait to see what the future holds, i’m eligible for a new upgrade this fall, although i’m a verizon member. so verizon better step it up with there hand set line for the fall.

  5. Yeah this is BS,both mine and my wifes have it really bad, so does my ipad 2.So I will be down at tmobile tomorrow hopefully to get it resolved. This just should not happen.

  6. I recently recieved my G2x today and the startup screen is where you canr eally see it at this point, its not quiet as bad on mine just in the corrners and a bit on the top center, im debating on weather or not it is worth it to have to ship it back to tmobile and wait up too 2 weeks for a new one which may or may nto have the same prople

  7. I agree that my $3000 Samsung LCD HDTV has more screen bleed than my $200 G2x. I love my G2x and if there is any screen bleed on it I have not noticed it yet. Screen bleed is just part of LCD technology. But, the only time you ever notice it is on a black screen in very low light…unless you do lots of gaming or movie watching on your phone then you will most likely never notice it. Out of curiosity I just stuck my G2x under my desk (to block the light) on the black settings screen and it looks great in the dark…I don’t see any bleed on mine. 🙂

  9. I returned mine due to that issue. Other than that the phone is very good. The camera is a bit weak for my taste but then again not many phones have a good camera like the Nexus One. I’m being picky here but this is a great phone. I would’ve kept it if it wasn’t for the screen bleed.

  10. Yeah I’m coming from the Nexus one to the G2x and I’m kinda disappointed. I have the screen bleeding issue too!!!!!!! and I’m the kinda person that likes to purchase games, I have a huge collection on the android market and I’m having trouble with a few like battle bears for example and the nvidia games available kinda suck! Monster Madness is fucking broken! and for some reason game lofts web sight is not recognizing my phone and i cant get nova!!!!!! one of the main reasons i upgraded. on top of all this heart break I just found out HTC is coming out with a dual core phone that looks a lot like the nexus one!!!!! I’m probably going to end up paying full price for that one if it comes out on T-mobile unless I return this thing!!! fuck I was really hoping this phone would kick ass but it leaves me wanting to reach for my nexus one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. This is actually not really noticeable unless you are in the complete dark. I’ve had my phone for a week now and never even noticed this problem until I was just doing a general google search of the G2X. Nice to be aware of this though lol.

  12. I may notice it if I’m in a dark room and actually looking for it but come on guys how often do you look at a black screen in a dark room? The word “bleeding” appears to be severe and that is what’s putting people up in arms. I would call it light leakage. Another thing to compare with other displays is the high contrast ratio. It’s a beautiful screen. Go check it out yourself.

  13. I  need some advice. I purchased a HTC incredible along with renewing my contract with Verizon. Less than one month later my screen went black and there was a red line going up and down the left part of my screen. The phone had not been dropped or damaged in any way. I called Verizon and explained the problem and they sent out a replacement since it was still under warranty. Now Verizon is trying to charge me almost 300.00 for the phone because they say it was dropped and the lcd is cracked. They provided photos and there are no visible damages on the phone, and I know this because the phone was never damaged. So, now I am having a battle with Verizon who refuses to take away the charge. I am so frustrated. Are there any other reasons as to why the LCD screen would bleed on a new phone? Help.

    • you could argue that shoddy manufacturing fried the screen and since there is no visible signs of damage the lcd could have been already defective and just been a ticking time bomb waiting to break.  Also they have no proof that it was your fault because their is no obvious sign of you causing delibrate damage i.e a cracked screen.

  16. The brightness is all the way up i have this phone i used it at half brightness it didnt do that plus it is amoled i looked up the specs. Do ur research.
