Revealed just days ahead of Mobile World Congress, LG is showing the G2 mini. The handset sits with a 4.7-inch display, which does have us questioning the use of the word ‘mini’ a bit. But regardless of the name, the LG G2 mini seems to be a slightly smaller and less powerful version of the G2.

In the case of the G2 mini we are looking at a 4.7-inch display with a qHD resolution. The handset is then powered by a Snapdragon 400 processor. In comparison, the regular model G2 sports a 5.2-inch 1080p display and has a Snapdragon 800 processor. Otherwise, the G2 mini also has 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage space and an 8 megapixel camera on the back.

Also on the back are the rear-facing buttons we’ve seen on other LG handsets. The G Flex has them, as well the G Pro 2. Those rear-facing buttons take on a bit of a different look on the G2 mini, at least as compared to the G Flex. Otherwise, the back of the handset is nicely textured, which does help to keep the phone in your hand.

Bottom line here, LG has taken the G2 with solid specs and shrunk it down in size. But on the not so good side, not only did they shrink the overall size, but they also shrunk the specs. This isn’t something unique to LG, in fact, numerous other ‘mini’ model handsets seem to suffer the same fate.

The handset is expected to begin shipping later this year, and will arrive with Android 4.4 Kit Kat. While the specs weren’t the nicest to see, we can only hope they go to help keep the price lower and more manageable. After all, while some prefer the flagship model smartphones, there is a whole other side that also takes price into a purchase decision.

  1. Once again; the Mini version of high end smartphone is dumb down again.

“The handset is then powered by a Snapdragon 400 processor. the G2 mini also has 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage space and an 8 megapixel camera on the back.”

Now you know why there is now choice for a buyer who wants a smaller size smartphone – it the iPhone or the iPhone! No other way of look at it! Most buyers want cutting edge technology in their purchase of a new phone. Apple just keeps rolling in this segment! LOL! Samsung and LG make dumb down versions for the suckers that don’t know better to get the iPhone.

  2. It’s hard not to look at the G2 mini as the runt of the family because of its decidedly mid-range spec sheet, but LG didn’t give it the G-series badge because of its hardware. No no, it’s all about software features here.
