So far we’ve yet to see a Honeycomb tablet make it to store shelves with anything but a 10.1″ screen. Archos and Samsung both have smaller tablets in the pipes, and now another tablet from Japanese manufacturer, Camangi will be looking to break the 10.1″ mold. Their 7″ Mangrove 7, will be released in Japan in mid-august.

The Mangrove 7 is almost the same size as the original Galaxy Tab, but packs guts more similar to the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Even with a new size for a honeycomb tablet the internals are familiar. With a Tegra 2 processor, 1 GB of RAM, and the usual set of sensors the Mangrove offers an almost tired platform, but for those who may find the size of current offerings a tad too large it could be just the tablet for them (in Japan that is).

Unfortunately Japanese devices aren’t known for leaving their homelands’ borders. Also worth noting is that both Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 8.9 and Archos 80 G9 tablets will be larger than the Mangrove 7 by at least an inch. Would you rather have a 7″ tablet, or is the abundance of larger slates coming out a result of “bigger is better?”

  1. Bigger IS often better, but after having owned a 7″ nook color, I can tell you its impossible to fit anything bigger into a normal sized pocket. Because of that I own a 4″ phone, a 7″ tablet for travel, and a 10″ tablet for home (though personally I would like an android tablet bigger than 10″ instead)

  2. The Mangrove 7 is not nearly as interesting as the Galaxy Tab 8.9. Of course, it’s size is appealing, but sadly, its screen resolution is still only 1024×600 instead f the 1280×800 of the Samsung one. No word on the battery life, and it’s much thicker than the Galaxy.

It’s available as pre-order for 50000 yens on amazon.co.jp but the price is damn too high.

You write that it’s not available outside Japan, but conversely it’s incredibly difficult to get a Galaxy Tab 10.1 when you are in Japan, nobody sells it here for a decent price, and overseas shipping fees are a real racket. It would cost less to just take a plane to Korea and back just to go and buy one.

  3. this on looks like the viewpad 7x. probably this one is for japan only, and the viewpad 7x for europe.
anyway i love 7 inch because it fit on the pocket and it’s perfect for train and bus traveling and catch up the news.
i have a 4 inch phone but it’s too smal for ebook and news reading on bus.
