Have you ever wanted to send an invite to a group of friends to eat out in this new restaurant, but didn’t want to broadcast it to your whole social network? Well, yes, there are a ton of group messaging services out there, but what if you didn’t want to go out of the app you’re currently on, and what if that app was called Swarm? Well, now you have a solution to that if your answer to both questions is yes.

Swarm, the offshoot of Foursquare where you can check-in to places like restaurants, cafes, museums, etc, now has a private messaging app so that you don’t have to tell the rest of the world where you will be going with your friends or family members (unless that is your intention of course). You could post an invite previously through Swarm’s Plan tab, but it was an open invitation and so you might leave yourself open to some undesirable show-ups (again, unless that was what you really wanted). This time, you can now send that invite to one person or several people who are in your Swarm contacts.

When Foursquare decided to rebrand itself as a competitor to Yelp and create a separate app for location check-ins, some people predicted that it will be a massive fail. While we still can’t precisely say that they proved the critics wrong, at least they’re both still alive and standing and even slowly getting new “fans”. This new private message feature of Swarm might encourage more users to use it, although most will still use Swarm to tell everyone they know where they’re eating, which new place they’re visiting, which concert they’re watching, etc (for various reasons which we won’t get into).

If you still don’t have this new feature of Swarm, check your updates page on Google Play Store. If it’s still not there, just wait a little bit more to invite that person you want to go with you to the new, romantic place in your neighborhood. Or maybe you can just actually message him/her through old-school text.
