Anytime something reaches a half a billion landmark, it is almost always a cause for celebration. Facebook-acquired photo sharing juggernaut Instagram has just announced that they already have 500 million users and shared some interesting facts and trends about their users and what they’re doing on the platform. Despite the controversial decision to change the logo and revamp the app, it seems that there isn’t any negative impact yet for the social network as they continue to gain more users every month.

Out of those 500 million active users, more than 300 million actually open their app daily. And if you think that most of these users are in North America, actually 4/5 of all Instagram users are located outside of the US. But within the US, there are more than 100 million monthly active users. The past two years alone have seen these numbers doubling in size, so this means that more and more people are actually getting into Instagram, rather than out of it.

There are over 95 million pictures and clips posted every day and more than 4.2 billion people tap or like posts. If you’re interested to learn what are the hashtags used most by users in various locations, here are some interesting facts. The #TBT (Throwback Thursday) hashtag has been used 325 million times and is still a pretty popular theme every, well, Thursday. Japan and Canada users often post about lowrider cars, Brazilians are crazy about golden retrievers, Morocco and Algeria are the Instagram hotspots when it comes to sneakers, for some reason.

What worries some Instagram users is the new algorithmic timeline that they are rolling out in more territories and to more users now. This means what you’ll see are the most popular in your network and not the chronological timeline you’re used to seeing. Let’s see if it will affect Instagram’s user numbers later on.
