If given the choice, most people would choose to be more environmentally-friendly right? Well, that is what we want to believe at least. So if there was a product that would help you save on energy and yet also power your beloved gadgets, then you should go for it, yes? Well an IndieGoGo crowd-funding campaign is hoping just that as they raise funds to produce Bioo Lite, a pot that will harness the energy naturally produced by plants in order to charge your smartphones or other gadgets.

It sounds like a high school science project, but it is in fact an idea that scientists have been looking at for years. A Barcelona-based company called Arkyne Technologies says they have been able to create a pot that will use the electricity produced by plants and turn it into something that can charge your smartphone or tablet. In layman’s terms, this is how it works: First you remove the USB inside the pot, then add some water inside and shake it carefully so the water will flow properly. Put the plant inside, fill with soil, and make sure the USB is visible. Plug in your device and see the “magic” happen.

The makers assure that the pot will not “force” the plant to do anything other than what it is doing naturally, which is the essential process of photosynthesis. But that also means that the output may not be as strong as expected, with 3.5 volts and 500 milliamps. They say that it will allow up to three charges per day. But as to how long it can charge, of course it depends on your device’s capacity. And plants produce varying amounts of electricity, so that’s a factor as well. And you have to make sure your plant is alive of course for this to work.

The crowd-funding campaign has already surpassed its $17,000 target and there is still a month left if you want to support them and be an early bird. You get to save 21% if you contribute to the campaign and get your own Bioo Lite pot for as low as around $111.
