The latest International Data Corporation (IDC) report has been published and this time around they are offering a look at smartphone shipments for the third quarter of 2013. And as we had been seeing, this is a number that is on the rise. In fact, the IDC is reporting the worldwide smartphone market has grown 38.8 percent as compared to Q3 2012.

More to that point, it was said that vendor shipments account for a total of 258.4 million smartphones during Q3 2013. That number has climbed from 237.0 million during Q2 2013 and also accounts for a new quarterly record. Looking at smartphones compared to all phones and we see a number that sits at 467.9 million. Similar to the smartphone number, this all phones number is for units shipped during Q3 2013.

Anyway, this time around we are seeing the top five smartphone vendors coming in as; Samsung, Apple, Huawei, Lenovo and LG. Samsung snatched up 31.4 percent of the market share with 81.2 million in terms of shipments. Apple is sitting in the number two position with 13.1 percent in market share and 33.4 million for unit shipments. The remaining three are in a close race with Huawei at 12.5 percent, Lenovo with 12.3 percent and LG with 12.0 percent. Those three accounted for 4.8, 4.7 and 4.6 percent market share respectively.

The top five in terms of mobile phone vendors has similar names, but does have Nokia sitting in number two and with LG and Huawei having flipped. Samsung still sits in the first position with 115.4 million shipments and 24.7 percent of the market share. Nokia sits above Apple with 64.6 million shipments and 13.8 percent of the market. Rounding out the top five is Apple, LG and Huawei with 33.8, 16.8 and 14.6 million shipments respectively.

Otherwise, part of the success of Samsung is being credited to more carrier support for the Galaxy S 4 as well as the launch of the Galaxy Note 3 and “continued demand” for the Galaxy S III. Apple on the other hand, is being credited with “early success” of the iPhone 5s and 5c.
