We saw the Huawei Ascend Mate phablet handset leak back in December, and officially got our hands on it in January at CES 2013. This massive smartphone features a 6.1-inch display and a 4050 mAh battery to match, and will soon be available in the UK from Vodafone, the carrier has announced.

Thus far neither pricing nor a launch date have been provided, but this will mark a special occasion for the carrier, with the Ascend Mate being the largest handset to date that it has offered to its subscribers. The battery is what sets the phabet apart from some of its competitors, something Vodafone is using to push the phone and with Huawei’s UK product director saying that it is “hugely important.”

The display measures in at 6.1-inches, and is an IPS offering with a resolution of 1280 x 720 with Corning Gorilla Glass. In addition to the large screen, the Ascend Mate features a quad-core 1.5GHz Hi-Silicon K3V2 processor, as well as an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 1-megapixel front-facing camera.

The camera is accompanied by auto focus and an HDR photography mode. There’s also Bluetooth 4.0, and the system itself runs Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. Huawei has put some thought into handling for the device, which is necessary given its huge dimensions: 6.5 x 3.4 x 0.4-inches with a weight of 198 grams.

Some of these features that make handling easier is a minimized keyboard and dial-pad, as well as a Universal Quick Panel that makes it easy to access various apps. You can see the device in action for yourself in our hands-on video above, and we’ll update you when we know pricing and launch date.

  1. Right so the behemoth isn’t even 1080p. I guess if you are Shaq that wouldn’t look stupid with a phone that size.

1280 x 720 is fine unless you are a techno moron unable to look at the overall package and value. These aren’t just for tossers playing video, some of us actually run businesses and look at a balance of features.
