Owners of the HTC One Google Play Edition may be getting the Android 4.4 update sooner than imagined. Via Twitter, HTC notes they’ve released the Android 4.4 KitKat code to Google for use on their HTC One GPE device. They also quickly absolved themselves of any responsibility moving forward.
After proclaiming they’d done their diligence, they went on to say “Timing of push via PlayStore to be determined by Google.” With that, HTC seems to have distanced themselves from the update altogether. As far as they’re concerned, the job is done, and it’s now in the hands of Google.
It’s a smart move, really. We tend to blame manufacturers for updates, and rightly so. It’s often they who drop the ball, or don’t want to support a handset moving forward. HTC has officially declared their work is done, leaving us staring in Google’s direction for answers on when that device will update.
We would caution anyone against expecting it will hit the handset any time soon. With Google slowly rolling the update out for Nexus devices, it would be interesting to see a GPE device get an update prior to a Nexus handset. We really doubt it will happen inside of a few weeks, but it’s good to see HTC, which has been historically terrible about updating and supporting devices, on their game this time around. The only thing left to see is what they’ve done with Android 4.4, and how Sense 5.5 interacts with it.
