HTC surprised us with a new smartphone offering. No, it’s not yet the Desire 830 leaked recently but a totally new One. Officially called as the HTC One S9, this device is from the new “S” line. Uh huh, the “One” is still in the name so now we’re curious if HTC is really giving up the “One”. Obviously with the launch of this new variant, the Taiwanese company is keeping it.

We thought we’re done with the One name as it can be very confusing. The word has been dropped from the flagship line and so we were introduced to the HTC 10. It’s a worthy makeover but the price is still a bit high. As for the HTC One S9, it still boasts of the familiar HTC design we’ve seen in the “M” line. HTC fans will notice that it looks a lot like the One M9 but is more like the One A9. Confused yet? Just think of it this way: One M9 combined with the One A9 will give you the One S9.

The HTC One S9 is basically a better looking M9 and an upgraded A9. It’s a mid-range phone that can very well be placed side-by-side with the new HTC 10 Lifestyle. The One S9 still looks like an iPhone 6 though although we’re sure the phone maker will once again say that it’s Apple who did the copying.

This “One” is new. It comes equipped with a 5.0-inch Full HD Super LCD screen, 2.0 GHz octa-core Helio X10 MediaTek processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB built-in storage, 2840mAh battery, UltraPixel front camera, and a 13MP rear camera with f/2.0 sensor with OIS. Unlike the One A9’s AMOLED display, the One S9 uses Super LCD.

There is no fingerprint reader which is kind of a bummer. Instead of a chipset from Qualcomm, it uses a Helio X10 processor from MediaTek so we know it could be cheaper. Unfortunately, it’s not. The HTC One S9 is priced at 499 euros in Germany. That is about $564 in the US which is not mid-range at all. That’s premium already so we really don’t know now what HTC wants to prove with the new One S9.
