It’s the photoshoot we’ve been waiting for: the HTC Magic and the Samsung I7500 getting up close and personal.  The two most-anticipated Android handsets of the year have been compared in a CNET Asia photoshoot, showing that when it comes to measurements and in-hand feel, there really may not be a whole lot in it.

Bear in mind that in this photo the I7500 was slightly closer to the camera, and running an early firmware version which led to the AMOLED touchscreen being dimmer than it will be at launch.  The I7500 lacks the hardware search button of the Magic, but it has a 3.5mm headphone socket whereas you’ll need an adapter to use your own headset with the HTC.

Frankly, both look like impressive devices, but the Samsung edges ahead when it comes to specifications.  It’s the camera that will likely swap most people: at 5-megapixels, with flash and autofocus, it’s higher than the 3.2-megapixel sensor in the HTC.

  1. Liking the I7500.... but will wait for "Bigfoot" or whatever the next sliding keyboard will be...
  2. Don't know why I thought the Samsung was bigger than the Magic, they're just about identical in dimensions. Has an official date been set for the 7500?
  3. The I7500 looks great, I just hope it is released within the next month. The 8gb of memory to store apps on is surely one of the biggest advantages it has over the Magic.
  4. I am leaning towards the I7500 now. But, I would happily accept either.
  5. Where was that t-mobile roadmap, I think it listed the Samsung as end of second quarter, right?
  6. wait did someone say HEADPHONE JACK?!?!
  7. The 17500 looks like a Samsung phone. The Magic looks more classy. I'd take the Magic over all the !7500's features.
  8. There seems to be quite a bit of upside to the Sammy hardware wise. The AMOLED screen should suck less power, while managing to look better at the same time. The 3.5mm headphone jack and MUCH better camera (if it's the same as my wife's Behold, that's a killer camera for a phone), are great improvements as well. The biggest thing for me, however, is the promised 8gb of onboard storage. This enables Android users to have more, larger, applications without troubles.

That being said, I for one am like the look of the Magic more. There's a uniqueness that can't be overlooked.

I will personally reserve judgment until I see the final software for each phone. Both Samsung and HTC have an excellent track record of creating their own UI and adding improvements to other OS's (the Samsung Omnia and the HTC Touch Pro both do WinMo very differently and much better than the stock OS).

    These are truly exciting times
  9. I've got a magic and I'm not bothered about the 6GB difference...I bought a £20 8gb card and popped it straight in...problem solved. Absolutely LOVE the phone btw...it's awesome.
  10. I want that samsung....always wanted that samsung....one day, I will have that samsung....

    lol
  11. If I'm not satisfied with "Bigfoot" when it hits, I'll probably be waiting a good while for my next Android phone. I'm NOT giving up this physical keyboard without a fight!
  12. I wonder if the rumoured lower RAM memory of the Samsung is true... I can't find any official spec sheets...

    I love the AMOLED screen!
