We know we’ve kept you waiting for our official HTC Hero hands-on demo video, but we hope you’ll find its been worthwhile. Android Community dragged one of HTC’s demo team away and made him spend fifteen minutes running through the Hero, covering all the new features in their Sense UI.

While it’s still early days, our takeaway-impression of the Hero – and the Sense UI – is a huge usability step forward for Android. Tasks which previously required third-party apps or trawling through the menus and browser are now brought right up to the homepage, and the various ways in which HTC have made them easy to organize and use are particularly slick.
If you’re looking for the full specifications of the Hero, HTC have put up their official product page. There’s also our full gallery of hands-on Hero images, which you can see here.

i might have to upgrade before my contract runs out.

what are the odds of having the sense UI working on the Magic? that would be awesome....
but... but.... teflon coated body..... and.... i guess i can learn to love the Hero... DOH!
And I really like the looks - clean, simple, functional, including the chin which protects the screen and trackball if you set it face-down. No iPhoney chrome trim, no gloss finish. No hard keys either, but for a phone this slick...I'm beginning to feel flexible about that requirement...
Maybe T-Mo will offer this later on, about the time my contract is up.

i kinda prefer the rounded look of the Magic to the Hero, and i suppose i can live with a 3MP camera PLUS if what HTC's CEO says is true, then i might get the Magic and hold out for the Sense UI

Having played with both the Magic and the Hero, they're both pretty compact handsets. The Hero is probably a little larger than the Magic overall, but they've done a good job making it feel compact. Again, the severely tapered edges do wonders for in-hand feel. There are a few comparison shots here; apologies that they're not the greatest quality, but the lighting at the launch event yesterday was appalling.
