So you’ve got a brand new HTC EVO 3D in your sights, but you’re thinking you want to take a trip down the color-based new world of Android casings that’s exploding all over the landscape these days. What will you do? Here’s what a fellow by the name of Zoidpilot over on XDA Developers did – simple and not at all destructive, right? Wrong! But you can’t make an EVO omelet without breaking a few cases, right? Also you’ll need Pop Tarts, but we’ll get to that later.

This whole adventure was born of an Independence Day death drop, aka this fellow’s EVO decided to jump out of his pocket and “commit suicide” on July the 4th, 2011. Read the entirety of his painful experience below this paragraph. He took this experience as a way to have his device be reborn, however, and now we’ve got a white EVO. For the win! Have a look at how this situation started:

While sitting down watching fireworks on the driveway, my phone decides to commit suicide via tumbling out of my pocket. Mind you – I don’t have a case for it yet, and I’m still waiting for my screen protector to come in the mail. I felt the shift in my pocket and heard the *clack* sound as the phone bounced three times on the concrete before landing face-down. My heart dropped. After cursing up a storm I mustered up the courage to pick it up to examine it… As expected it was utter disaster. Nicks and scratches on every corner, and a little notch on the aluminum lining of the screen. I know I may sound dramatic, but I’m sure theres people out there who feel my pain.

OK! fast-forward to today. I figured since most of the damage was to the back cover, I would just peruse this interweb thingy and find a replacement… Turns out they average about $35.00 a pop. Not bad. So then my imagination kicks in and I start to wonder if they’re going to make a white Evo3D. Apparently not. Unless I’m mistaken there is no plan for a white one yet. Boo to that I say! So the guy I always argue with in my head blurted out “I might as well paint my own”… For once we both agreed and so spawned my plan…

His instructions for doing this mod are super basic, and if you’ve ever popped the back off the EVO 3D you’ll know there’s not much to it, so without further ado, here it is in a nutshell:

1. Take the back off the phone – IMPORTANT
2. Take the buttons covers out of the back – volume, power, etc
3. Cover the red camera ring up with fine painter’s tape
4. Spray two or more coats of white paint on all sides
5. Literally bake the cover in the oven to set the paint in tight
6. Scrape off the paint from the chrome HTC logo
7. Paint the black band black again if you like with a similar tape situation
8. Win!

Supply list – if you need em:
2 SHEETS OF EXTREMELY FINE SANDPAPER
1 CAN OF BLACK PRIMER SPRAY PAINT
1 CAN OF WHITE PRIMER SPRAY PAINT
1 CAN OF GLOSS WHITE ENAMEL SPRAY PAINT
1 BOTTLE OF GLOSS WHITE TOUCH UP PAINT (just in case)
1 SET OF PAINT BRUSHES (for the just in case)
1 ROLL OF MASKING TAPE
1 RAZOR BLADE

Have a look at the making-of photos above and answer us this: would you do the same thing with your device now that battery covers are more often than not consisting of the whole non-screen bulk of the device? Could be a win!

And the Pop Tarts bit? The creator of this masterpiece says they’re essential for a fully poptastic complete job. Yummy!
