A new HTC device has popped up in benchmark testing, but it’s not the mid-range smartphone some have been expecting. This one has flagship written all over it, but we just got hold of the One (M8), so what is it? Top-end specs and a respectible screen suggest a One variant of sorts, but the camera specs lised don’t jibe.

Listed only as the HTC 0PAJ3, the device runs the latest version of android (4.4.2), and comes with a Snapdragon 801 clocked at 2.265 GHz. The Adreno 330 GPU and 2GB RAM are fronted by a 1920 x 1080 screen. The camera ensemble is what throws us off, here, as there is a 5MP front shooter — just like the One (M8) — with a 13MP rear camera. That suggests the Ultrapixel camera, which is 4MP (and can be argued to be 16MP), isn’t on this device.

What we don’t see is the screen size. HTC is quietly rumored to be working on a Nexus tablet, so this could be that device. The tablet would likely be larger than the Nexus 7, and the resolution listed isn’t as dense as the Nexus 7. If the listed device is a tablet, it’s likely to be panned heavily for its screen, so we’ll look elsewhere for clues as to what this is.

Some consider this to be the latest HTC Butterfly, but that remains to be seen. Given the specs, we’d like to think it’s a smartphone. Outside of the One (M8), HTC intentions remains opaque. It could simply be a reference device tested internally. We’ll wait for more clues, becuase with HTC, you know you’re getting leaked info.
