Aside from Titanium, one of the more popular backups solutions is Helium from ClockworkMod Recovery developer Koushik “koush” Dutta. This backup app prides itself for being easy to use and not requiring any root access. Now Koush has upped that ease of use by providing a Chrome browser extension for starting the Helium backup process. Now users won’t have to fiddle around with desktop installers for their particular OS and can simply plug in their phones to their computer or Chromebook and get Helium up and running in no time.

Although Helium can function without root access, the tradeoff is that you will have to connect your Android device to a computer via a USB cable. In the past, Koush provided desktop installers for Windows, Mac, and Linux for using Helium. To simply the process even further, all you need now is the Chrome extension, a single package that works on any OS that has Chrome running on it.

The process and mechanisms remain the same. The desktop app works by enabling the slightly hidden Android backup functionality that gets activated when a device is connected to a computer via a USB cable. So simply have both the Helium Android app and the new Chrome extension running and connect the two devices and you’re good to go.

Helium comes in free and pro versions. The free Helium allows you to backup and restore to an SD Card and backup and restore from a PC. The pro version, naturally, unlocks a lot more features, liked scheduled backup, Android to Android sync, and Cloud backup and restore, all for a one-time purchase of $4.99.
