Harman is a big name in the electronics and audio world and has a lot of its hardware and tech inside cars. Harman has announced that it is extending support for the Android platform inside of vehicles by supporting the Android Open Accessory Protocol. This makes Harman the first major automotive tech partner to offer the new connectivity standard.

The support will allow for the automotive gear that Harman offers to control Android smartphone or tablet content like movies, music, or navigation apps using the car dashboard and steering wheel controls. The support is integrated across all levels of the Harman automotive range from entry-level to high-end.

With a vehicle that supports the Android protocols, operating apps on the smartphones while driving will be safer and easier to do than having to look down at the screen while driving. The Android Open Accessory Protocol is integrated into Android 3.1 and higher devices and can be added as an upgrade to Android 2.3.4 and up.
