HTC is rumored to be making two Nexus devices for Google this year. If that’s true, then the pair could be the last to be produced by a third-party manufacturer as there are new reports that say Google might be doing an Apple when it comes to the Nexus line. By that we mean Google could be having more control of the device by sourcing different components and technologies and using them in one package, running pure Android, housed in a well-designed form, and with a price that’s affordable.

Google manufacturing the next Nexus devices on its own may be the new direction. In fact, we’ve seen the possibility with the introduction of the Pixel C. We’re not sure if the device is really selling now but we’re curious to know if this change will bring in more money for the Nexus division. You see, Google’s Nexus phones haven’t really made it big in the mobile industry. The Nexus 6P introduced last year impressed us but the other Nexus phones are just fine. We can’t consider them as the best Android phones today.

Nexus phones purely controlled by Google? They could be more stable and robust. Google doesn’t have to deal with device manufacturers now because it can control the device and software and make the necessary updates as needed.

Google is also said to compete with the more high-end iPhone models with this Nexus development. It’s clear what Google wants: make Nexus better (or is it better Nexus?) What we’re not certain is who will make the phones. HTC could see a boost in numbers if Google decides to give the job to the Taiwanese company. If not, the latter might see another decline in sales.

The Pixel C is well-built and well-designed. Google did a good job with it. If the tech giant decides to make its own Nexus phones, they will be very much welcomed by the Android community. Google just needs to prove it and strategize well to bring consumers the ultimate Android experience.

  1. This article and the dozens of virtuayl identical repeats of it over the last two days is our comedy and wishful thinking.
First off, Do none of you remember Motorola. Google owned them 100% Then and only then was something like this pipe dream possible. That lasted about 1 year.
Your all Seem to think they can do the same without owning à manufacturing OEM or at least a complete subcontracted facility. They can’t, if they could they would have.
You also all seen to think any or all off OEM’s will run to sign up to be a No Name, behind the scenes manufacturer for a niche phone for Google. They won’t.

That’s what the nexus phones are and you sere how much control Google has over the manufacturing of them. None!
All the updates still have to work their way through the long pipeline of OEM parts suppliers, then to the actual OEM of the phone then to the carriers, then to the consumer. Assuming there are no issues.
Yes, even on the new unlocked nexus 6P, the carriers (USA) still have a say and do some of their mythical testing.

But according to these fantasy wish-fest articles, Google is going to somehow going to overnight become apple. As much as Google wants to be apple it will never happen as long as Android remains free for Alll to use.
That is the only reason Android even established a market share and still has one to this day. Free OS, endless OEM’s and cheap phones.

Just go back two years ago all you same geniuses were claiming Google’s Motorola could never do exactly what you are claiming Google is planning to do now. You All said, doing so would pass off the other OEM’s and Android would fragment and fail. You all cried how Samsung would replace Android with Tizen etc. By the way, You all also said Tizen was here to stay, but that’s another argument.

Google wiki never become apple, much as they want to be. Because they don’t want to be a manufacturer. They are also not equipped to be one, not do they have the knowledge to bed one or run one.
If it was one single nexus / Android phone vs iPhone, maybe. Add long as the nexus was 50% cheaper. But with hundreds of Android phones vs a single iPhone, Not a chance. Just look at the market as it exists today to predict the future. Apples USA share is now equal to all of Android, in the non inner-city, urban areas they outsell Android 5 to 1

Trust me Google knows this and knows they can’t be an OEM or even farm it out as spoke does. They would get killed.
Which is also why Google makes all their apps and services available on iOS and Mac. One could argue, they design and develope for then first these days.
Google’s only concern is selling ads, which means keeping their software and services on as many different units as possible

  2. One thing I wish someone would do is to make an Android phone with a 4.5-inch screen, because that would be easier to carry around in a pocket.

  3. It’s going to take a major stage fright type situation that, unlike last time spreads uncontrolled as a widespread exploit. Google dodged a bullet the last few times, but there will come a time that slow oem/carrier updates cripple millions of phones.

Even at that, I’m just not sure enough revenue comes out of android for Google to care (as revealed by Apple lawyers recent subpoena). And margins are only getting thinner.
