Google Family Category

One of the new things Google presented during the recent developer conference was the “Family star” icon. It’s one way to improve app discovery and give the parents peace of mind. The new Family category for Google Play means all apps and games are suited for the ages of the children.

When you open the Google Play Store on your browser, under Apps, you will see the new Family category. Subcategories include the following: Ages 5 & Under, Ages 6-8, Ages 9 & Up, Action & Adventure, Brain Games, Creativity, Education, Music & Video, and Pretend Play. This new section just went live on the web version.

Google is still working on the ratings system and filters for age and interests. We can expect special pages for some of the kids’ favorite characters too to show up– to probably to get them more attracted to that mobile device of yours. You see, those popular characters will only make your child want to download more apps and games. Even if the apps have been filtered and tagged as kid-friendly, you shouldn’t be handing your kid a smartphone or tablet all the time. I’m assuming you’re in control of your child’s mobile play time.

You may encounter a few issues this early but Google Play should be featuring the Family category in full and with less mistakes using the filter or rating system. The tech giant has posted a ‘Parent Guide to Google Play‘ for more details how to spot family-friendly content. When you see the family star icon, you will know if app is family-friend or is appropriate for a specific age group.

There are parents who complain about unwanted purchases but with this development, the apps are now labeled for 0-12 on the star badge. For in-app purchases, password is already required before your kid accidentally clicks on an item.

There may be ads showing on apps but under the Family category, you’ll also now see the “Ad-supported family app” label. It’s just below the Install or Buy button. Google knows you might still see anything unusual or inappropriate so feedback is highly appreciated.
