The update for Google Photos for Android, version 1.18, is not something super major. In fact, on its Google+ page, there is only one thing mentioned that has changed for the app in this update. Yet, it is a pretty significant one, for those who would like to have that option anytime they want. We’re talking about the ability to do manual backup for selected photos and that has now arrived, at least for the Google Photos for Android app.

Previously, you needed to setup the app to automatically backup your photos either through WiFi only or anytime using WiFi or your own mobile data connection. This was pretty significant, especially if you’re constantly watching your data consumption. But what if you wanted to quickly upload some photos on the fly, but you don’t have WiFi connection at the moment? That is basically what the manual backup feature can help you with. You can choose the photos you want to upload to the Google Photos server and then back it up, regardless of your connection.

It’s pretty easy to do the manual backup. Just long press on the photo or photos that you want to upload. You’ll see it highlighted by some blue ticks. On the upper right hand corner, you’ll see a three dots menu. Click on it and then select “backup now” and as the label says, they will indeed be backed up now.

Update your Google Photos now to version 1.18 to enjoy this new feature. If you haven’t yet, you can download the app for free from the Google Play Store.
