Google launched Android Experiments only last year as a showcase of creative Android projects. It was a new venture where developers were invited to submit their experiments to Google. It’s more of a gallery now where app development projects are shown off. An Android Experiments project is one that makes use of the several capabilities and features of the mobile platform in new ways.

Last year’s Android Experiments resulted to several works from creative geeks who submitted genius hacks of the IOIO board, cool watch faces, and live wallpapers–some of which you may using already. Google is opening the Android Experiments I/O Challenge once again only after seven months. It’s earlier now because the best projects will be chosen to be showcased at the upcoming Google I/O 2016 in May 18 to 20.

Google opened the Android Experiments I/O Challenge last Friday, March 25 and developers are encouraged to submit experiments until April 13. That’s only less than three weeks of development but we’re sure you already have something in mind or are currently working on one now. It’s your chance to show Google and the whole Android community your genius projects.

Google will be choosing the top three Android Experiments entries plus five runner-ups. The top winners will each win a free trip to the Google I/O conference in Mountain View, California. Each of the runners-up will receive a Nexus 6P smartphone.

The Android team gave some suggestions of what makes a good project. These are not criteria or categories but just ideas: Creative uses of Android’s new or distinctive features, open source projects that inspire other developers, experiments with unique visual aesthetics, and projects that explore how we interact with our devices.

Android Experiments are open source so feel free to create new stuff. You may start from scratch or be inspired from the projects you’ll see in the gallery.

View the Android Experiments site and submit your experiment.
