Android and Gmail should work very well together considering they have the same parent. For the most part Android and Google play well together, but like most things, there is always room for improvement.

Google has announced some improvements for the web-based version of Gmail for the Android and iPhone platforms reports InformationWeek. The biggest of the improvements is faster address auto-completion. That means you have to type less characters before finding possible contacts, which is always nice.

Auto-completion allows you to begin typing an address and Gmail will predict which of you contacts you want to email and enter the address for you. The second improvement is specifically for Android devices with keyboards like the G1. Keyboard equipped devices will now have access to keyboard shortcuts.

  1. The G1 gmail app already has keyboard shortcuts. While in a message try pressing the 'j' or 'k' key they will move between older and newer messages. The keys choice comes from vi.
  2. That's great for iphone / pre users, but do android users have to wait for the next rom update to get improvements in the gmail client?
  3. this is really annoying. who has an Android phone but then goes to the web-based gmail client rather than using the native app?

seriously google, what are you thinking? I bought the G1 because I wanted all of this to be native and work together. If I wanted to launch a browser for everything, I would have stuck with my N95.

this is an old story, the cupcake update added these things to the native app.
  5. Hopefully those keyboard shortcuts will start to work on Google Reader, too.
  6. On the plus side, gmail definitely seems less clunky since the 1.5 update. Much easier to use and more streamlined.
  7. For the record, the keyboard shortcuts don't actually require a physical keyboard. They can be accomplished with the virtual keyboard too, though I suppose they are of questionable usefulness when used that way.

Hold down the Menu key for 2 seconds to pop up the Virtual Keyboard from anywhere.
